    hello, I am not sure if this has been done previously (I am sure it has) but I can't find it off the glance.

    Is there any benchmark comparison between ATI Radeon Mobile HD 5870 and vs ATI Radeon Mobile HD 4870 Crossfire ?

    If it's been talked about previously, please point me to the right thread.

    thanks

    Answer = No.

    Well, if you examine Notebookcheck's figures, maybe.

    There hasn't been benchmarks done yet, but the difference isn't all that much. Maybe 20% better at the most.

    EDIT: My mistake, I thought you meant a single 4870 against a single 5870.

    The only computer that I saw equipped with HD Mobility 5870 was the Asus G73, but it's only 128-bit. So if the HD 4870 is GDDR5, the Xfire will be faster than the single 5870.

    There are no GDDR5 mobile 4870s as of now, I would always take one, more powerful card over 2 lesser ones.

    The thing with the 5870 mobile parts is that they are actually desktop 5770s- with 800 shaders and all the features of that part, down to the transistor count. This is shown here: Link
    If the specs of the 4870X2 from here are true then the 4870X2 would be substantially faster then the 5870, more then 50%, as the 4870X2 has twice the shader count, quite unlike the desktop version.
    Edit: If the above comment is true then the mobile 4870X2 would be an underclocked 4850X2 desktop part due to the GDDR3 ram. It will still be more powerful then the 5870.
    The only thing the 5870 mobile has going for it is the 40nm fabrication which uses less power and produces less heat then the older 55nm fabrication used by the 4870X2.

    Not all games benefit from CrossfireX setups, like for example World of Warcraft.
    (At least the last time i checked.)

    ATI HD4870 CF will outperform single HD5870 card.

    Most games do benefit from Crossfire. It may not offer 100% scaling all the time, but every new release game pretty much includes Crossfire support nowadays. I can't think of any game that didn't like my Crossfire setup of 4890+4870 1GB+4850 1GB.

    HD 4870 = 55nm 256-bit GDDR3 w/ 800 shaders vs. HD 5870 = 40nm 128-bit GDDR5 w/ 800 shaders. One on one, the HD 5870 would only win due to faster clocks and tweaks. If the 4870 is in Crossfire and the game even has remote support from it, it would win hands down.
