ATI leaks out Southern Islands codenames for next-gen GPU leaks out Southern Islands codenames for next-gen GPUs

Um, oops? ATI's latest Catalyst driver release has dished out some info that we imagine the company didn't want to reveal quite yet. The names of some Southern Islands have been spotted -- Cayman and Antilles appear to be the flagship chips -- suggesting a refresh to the critically acclaimed Evergreen line of GPUs may not be far off. Rumors have been swirling for a while about ATI's reputed shift to island-based nomenclature, and while hard specs are nowhere to be found, we can see that the Red Team is planning an overhaul with no less than 10 new additions to its roster. Hardly unpredictable, but good to know that ATI has something to counter NVIDIA's heart-stealing GTX 460.

Fermi was a surprise. We didn't think it was going to be competition for ATI's 5870, but it turned out to be a beast. Don't underestimate Nvidia. But I can say the Islands are going to be nice. I'm pretty interested in Cayman. Only thing is... this is for desktops. Islands for notebooks won't show up until later. By then Northern Islands will be lith'd on TSMC's 28nm node. Southern Islands is suppossed to be a hybrid between 40nm and 28nm. The cores of the GPU's are going to be 40nm, while most other parts SHOULD be in 28nm. GoFlo is in the game now also, so whatever TSMC can't fulfill... 28nm for notebooks looks good so far IMO. Main thing I'm saying is... don't expect 28nm in notebooks very soon.
