Im replacing my laptop from a motherboard with an GMA x3100 to a motherboard with dedicated graphics (ATI x1400) the problem is of course I have a heatsink but the heatsink I have is made for integrated graphics so it only covers the cpu and chipset and it doesnt reach far enough to cover the gpu.My question is will the gpu still have stable temps without the heatsink directly covering it? Does the heatsink cool the whole system down or only the parts its directly over?.(I do plan to do some light gaming)Thanks.

You will need a heatsink for your graphics card, no matter what. You cannot get away without one. Well you can, but only for about 2 minutes max, or the gpu will burn out.
The X1400 is much more powerful than any integrated graphics system, which means that it gets hotter.
You will have to contact Gateway, for a heatsink for your graphics card.

Your upgrade does not make much sense.
You are swapping motherboards, so to have an x1400.
But things get weird, cause where did you get an x1400 without a heatsink?

If you buy an X1400 from any retailer, than you will be getting it with the appropriate heatsink.

(lol ebay)well there will be a heatsink but the heatsink doesn't directly cover the gpu so the heatsink would not be able to cool the gpu unless it directly covered it?

For the same notebook, there are different heatsinks, one for integrated gfx and one for discrete. He bought a mainboard with the discrete thus leaving him with his old heatsink, thus why there is no heatsink on the ATI chip. He'll need to try and get one off ebay or somewhere.

lol i had the same problem when upgrading my dv6000 to a dedicated card exept i didnt know. youll have to find the heatsink pulled from another laptop you could probaly get away with no heatsink if you underclocked it and such but that would defeat the purpose for it. also watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oABB2lxaxNk thats a celeron 420 with no heatsink its doing just fine =D

that guy is an idiot. Did you notice that none of the speedfan values changed after he removed the heatsink. I dont know if you have tried, but if you apply any force to the cpu, it will cause the system to hang. When the system hangs, it is barely using any power, and thus does not get hot.

Its not a good idea to do what is done in the video.

Yeah it should. Was the board guaranteed working from the seller? Look into your return options and what guarantee that the seller gave you. It is slightly possible that the board may have been damaged on installation/handling as they're really sensitive to things like electrical/static shock, but I think its probably more possible that the board was bad?

*edit* I assumed you got it off ebay?

just put in the battery seems that the motherboard powers on with the battery but when I use the power cord into the DC the board doesn't power on unless the battery is in and the battery charge light doesnt light up, but another problem is that the lcd doesn't turn on when using the battery so the system powers up the fan turns on but the lcd doesn't for some reason... so it seems that the board has a bad dc but that doesn't explain why the lcd doesn't turn on (NOTE: tested with no cpu (took it out because it wasn't compatible) would that have something to do with the lcd not turning on? Thanks.

Just tested with an external vga moniter and it isnt showing anything either... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ok so i was taking apart an old windows 98 computer taking out everything to sell while i came upon a graphics card heat sink very nice the colour was green

i say if you have an older computer that u dont use or need open it up grab the heat sink and install it to your graphics card its really simple all u do is stick it on the graphics card
    it works amazingly
i use ubuntu linux on my laptop and i have an ATI graphics card and it runs perfectly i even put to the ultimate test a little laggy but it worked great

using a heatsink from a desktop graphics card wont work it needs to be for the laptop thin enough to fit into it and with the heatpipes directing heat to the fan
