I've been googling, browsing and searching for this answer... Does anyone know or have a link to a page that can validate this?
I have a DELL E1705/9400 (Ships with either the x1400 or the 7800Go) and I'd like to put a x1600 (or x1800 is fine too) into it.
So, the video cards would need to have the same power requirements via the motherboard connector, same layout for the copper heat sink... etc. I'm fine with doing a little rigging if need be, but I can't change power requirements or connectors![]()
Anyone try this or know?
Thanks,
Lauski

Mr._Kubelwagen More machine now than man
No, you cannot upgrade your video card. Unless you have the X1400 currently, and want to put in a 7800. But the x1600 is not compatible.

In the Dell's case...it can be upgraded. But only to a 7900GS (pretty darn good, better than x1600). The card HAS to be from another E1705 or direct from Dell/eBay for the E1705, and it MAY need a beefier cooling solution that may come with a 7900GS.

and I won't put a 7800Go, as I am pretty sure that it is one of the affected cards.

Unless you find the right MXM card to fit your slot your out of luck, as well as dell usually uses proprietary interfaces. The 7900GS is a strong card and very overclockable. For more info on MXM look here:

Thanks guys, great info.
While on the topic, here's the other post I just finally finished... been busy today: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=298118
So Liquidxit2 are you saying that even if I grab a 7900 NVidia that I may be just as screwed and get a video card failure like I've already had twice?
I think in that case, I'll have to stuff an X1400 in it and sell it... This is getting old... =\ -

Gotcha, I remember seeing that now about the 8xxx series from Slashdot. So I was right in being curious as to why I am having these terrible issues with my 7800...
ATI x1600 (or higher) compatible in a system supporting x1400?
