I have got brand new DELL XPS M1530:

    Intel T9300

    4GB DDR2-SDRAM

    200GB 7200 rpm harddrive

    256MB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

    Vista Ultimate.

Yesterday, I have a Skype phone with my friends. I use my webcam to transmit my video but my friend did not.

During the call, I browse the Internet using IE. I open a few site and read some articles from some site.

The Internet connection was so good and fast.

and also I use AC Adapter NOT battery.

    My questions:

Why did the phone call a little bit skipped everytime I scroll the webpage using my mouse scroll or I open a new link / I did something with the page?

BUT I ONLY experience this when I have a phone call, when I play music using WinAmp, I did not have any skip.

Why can this happen? My laptop specs also high and good.

Does this has any relation with Vista? Because I read in some forums that Vista has some problems.

    Thank you very much.

Next time when you are on a call, try increasing the process priority of Skype via task manager. Also if your power plan is set to Power saver, then try changing it to Balanced or High Performance. If either of these improves things, then it’s a matter of Skype not getting enough CPU cycles. But as you said, your PC shouldn’t have any trouble running Skype at all.

How to increase the priority setting on the task manager?

I've change the battery setting. I've changed it to Balanced.

How can the condition "Skype not getting enough CPU cycles" can happen?

Yes, same as your XPS M1330, I also have high specs.

How can the issue happen on my high specs laptop? What cause it?

    Thank you.

Skype calls and video use a lot of processing power.

    1. Does my specification not capable of handling this?
    2. Either Yahoo Messenger call also use a lot of processing power?
    3. Is it ok to change the priority to Skype? How about the other OS processes? Is doing this will disturb them?

    Thank you.

Your spec is more than capable of handling skype. The problem has to be related to some software issue. Are you using the preinstalled Vista copy or did you do a clean installation (not a restore)? What is the virus guard/firewall you have ?

I don’t think Skype in particular takes more CPU power compared to other IMs

Changing the process priority is completely safe. Other processes may get affected by it, but there is nothing to worry about. You can always switch it back to normal if you feel it has made the notebook unresponsive.

Also check the CPU usage of Skype (when calling) and see if there are any other programs eating up the CPU.

    1. What software issue do you mean? And what should I do?
I use the Genuine Windows Vista ULTIMATE when I bought this XPS M1530, it was bundled with DELL.
For Anti Virus, I use the AVG Anti Virus.
Yeah, thanks for remind me, I guess since I installed the AVG, the phone skipped. It just a guess, I don't really realize it, but first time I use my laptop, I use McAfee which was installed by DELL. Then I change it to AVG because the McAfee Anti Spam cause some problem on IE.

    2. Yes, I also thought that Skype is not too heavy to be ran.

    3. Does changing the priority process will not affect the whole OS process? I am afraid I will do that if I change it.

    Thank you.

I forgot to tell that before this skipped phone happen, the first time I bought the laptop I haven't bought a mouse so I used to use the DELL touchpad.

If I use a touchpad, I cannot scroll web pages as fast as external mouse and the phone was not skipped.

A few weeks ago, I bought a USB scroll mouse so now I use an external mouse and I can scroll any site pages quite fast and I found out that the phone sound was skipped.

Does this thing related with the skipped phone?

    Thank you.
