Yes, it is possible to upgrade your hard drive, but since you already have 4 gb of memory you can't get any more memory. If you have 64 bit vista you would be able to utilize all 4 gigs of memory instead of about 3gb, but it won't make the score any higher. That windows score doesn't really mean all that much anyway.

Your memory is fine. Ignore WEI scores because they don't mean much.

    What harddrive do you have?

Seagate 7200.3 250GB is going for $87. Great deal.

I suppose you could upgrade your RAM to a higher speed chip type. Eg DDR2-800 but i think it would only run at 667 speed and in that case its pointless and a waste of money. I think PhilFlow will be able to confirm that.

Thnxxx everyone for your help ....

unfortunately it seems that i have 5400 rpm 160 gb hdd ... so if i manage to get 7200 250gb hdd, will it be waste of money ?!
i mean, is it really much faster than the one i already have ? ....

i have vista 32bit and it appears that dell doesn't support vista 64 drivers for xps 1530 !!! HERE ....
so how can i get vista 64 drivers ?! ... and does it worth to install vista 64 instead of 32 as vista 64 has a lot of compatibility issues ? .....

If you are playing games then the faster hard drive would help but otherwise you would probably only notice a 2 or 3 second increase in large file transfer times. I'm not so sure regarding the 32/64 bit issue. I would stick with the 32 bit version for now as your correct, there are some compatability issues.

It depends a bit on what you do with your laptop. The latest generation 7200 rpm drives will make your system more responsive during multitasking and will launch applications faster.

This review (several pages) gives a good impression on the speed differences between a WD 5400 and WD 7200 rpm drive:

Go for the 7200RPM, you'll see a significant boost in application loading.

As for Vista 64, the only problem is that you need 64-bit drivers. Best - google the driver's model name/no., or go to the device manufacturer's site, and look for Vista 64 drivers.

Vista 64 can run almost all 32-bit programs, but it will choke when you run a 16-bit program or lower.

The latest generation 7200rpm drives are very fast. I am replacing a 160gb 5400rpm seagate with a Hitachi 7K320 and the difference in performance is pretty high. I would recommend getting the higher rpm drive. But only do so if you actually need more harddrive speed. Dont buy a new harddrive if you want to see different WEI numbers, cause you would be wasting your money.
