I have a GTX 260M. I am not sure what MXM this is and what it can be upgraded too. What high-end/newer gen cards can this be upgraded too and for how much? The reason why i ask is because i am mostly curious what my options will be if my gpu burns out ^^ Think like a year or 2 ahead here ^^

What laptop? Most high end notebook GPU's are MXM, Mobile PCI-Express Module. If it is an ASUS, I recall they have some proprietary form of MXM, not upgradable with normal MXM but upgradable to another ASUS MXM card.

there are like 4 different standards of MXM they upgrade the board/interface every once in awhile.

Probably MXM 3.0b but really depends on your laptop/GPU.

Sorry to say but your GPU is what it is. While Asus adheres to the MXM pin out they flip the pin out 180 degrees so that you cannot upgrade it with an aftermarket or other manufactures card. Plus there is the issue of the bios not
recognizing the new card. (if you could replace it)

unfortunately the gtx 260m is the best asus card for that particular interface and form factor which is MXM 2.1 asus reversed.

    you could only downgrade.

However with their newer MXM 3.0b laptops it looks like it is not proprietary or reversed, its highly possible that a gtx 470m would work in those. But you dont have one of those, because they didnt make any 260m mxm 3.0 cards im pretty sure.

i just think its worth getting out there, the newest Asus laptops are standard MXM like a Clevo, at least on the electrical side of things. And standard MXM 3.0 cards are not longer than the Asus cards.

Yep, the vBIOS is embedded in the BIOS. Either you should replace your card with the same brand/model or hack your BIOS to include the new card's vBIOS.

GPU upgrades are rarely worth it for laptops. If you have ExpressCard, you might see benefit with ViDock but your GPU is pretty good as it is. Else, just save up for a new laptop.

your machine actually could" upgrade" to a 360 gts in theory

Although it gets a lower 3dmark score, it uses less power and uses gddr5.

No one has done this transplant strangely. Someone did the opposite and it worked! the machine that had 360 gts has an i5 and it uses the 260 gtx.

finding an asus g60 360 gts gpu would be super unlikely.

It would mmake no sense. but it is possible.

ok i'll keep that noted for the future. I was asking because i want this laptop to last for years but i got a feeling with the bad cooling system in the g51j that the gpu will die after 2-3 years. I figured getting a new gpu would be cheaper than buying a new laptop

A cheap upgrade solution would be to buy or make a notebook cooling stand and to change the TIM inside your computer. Also, the obvious cleaning your laptop once in a while (especially the fans of dust) will help tremendously.

fan is clean...starting to mod the case...i got a laptop cooler. Going to replace the fans with higher out put fans also i am going to drill 1/8th inch holes every centimeter for passive cooling plus for the laptop cooler will beable to blow fresh cool air inside. Also i hope to add the heatsinks that forge used...getting there slowly. What is the TIM? I hope to replace the thermal paste with artic silver 5 but thats a ways away....i kinda don't want to do that one ^^

Thought all G50/G51/G60 suffer from the same problem. There is almost no ventilation for the bottom, thus causing the GPU/CPU to re-intake the hot air. Very fail design.

I used a wire brush bit on my drill and made a 1.5inch diamiter whole where the fan should have a fan ^^ next is little wholes everywhere!!!!! Than heatsinks on heatpipe
