    Hi,

I feel like the fan in my Acer 4820TG has become noisy over the last 2 years. Is there a way I can replace it with a more silent fan or even with passive cooling? Of course I don't want to compromise on heat production. I would like the laptop to last for some more time because it still works well.

    Thank you!

Try taking it apart and lubing the fan. It could be clogged with some dust as well, so give it a good shot with some compressed air, and see if that helps.
Otherwise, find a replacement fan on ebay.

when you take the fan out to clean it, there may be 3 screws on the bottom of the fan. if so you can remove those screws and then the bottom cover will come off and allow for much easier cleaning of the inside of the fan. as far as lubing the fan motor i'm not sure if it has bearings or brushes inside the motor. however i would only use 1 tiny drop of FINE MACHINE OIL. if you could take a picture of the fan and send it to me, i might have a a fan that would be an exact replacement for your current one.

with the fan out also make sure the heat exchanger's fins are totally clear. i know i've taken a few acer fans out and found the entire fan's exhaust port totally blocked by months/years of dust and debris sucked in thru the fan that then got stuck behind and even between the fins.

has the fan ever been removed.... if not i'd bet just cleaning the fan and the fins in front of it will resolve your noise problem. however if you actually take the fan out to clean it instead of just using canned air to blow all the dust back inside the the laptop then you may need a new fan. if the one i have is not the same as yours they are easily found on ebay and should be around $20 or less.

Why not buy the new fan from Acer?

    (Acer is the maker.)

    Or from Newegg?

I mean, Newegg invariably has a ton of new fans to choose from.

Acer doesn't sell DIY replacement parts because they want you to pay full price for a maintenance + stuffs.

Newegg just sells the laptop and doesn't handle the warranty of the laptop

    Hi,

I opened the Laptop to clean the fan but unfortunately I have a small problem now: There is a screw under the caps lock key and I can not fix it anymore. It just turns in the hole but does not hold. Now, I sometimes the is a gap where the top and the bottom plastic parts meet. Is this a problem with regard to tensions of the mainboard?

    Hi,

    it looks like this:

I can push it back together but it holds just for like a minute or so then the gap returns.

Most Acer palmrests are held together by plastic clips. If it doesn't seat right, likely you've broken them. Have you tried to disassemble the laptop and reassemble it?

I think I broke a clip in the area where the screen is connected. I don't really mind if it does not look good but do you think this gap is a problem for the mainboard regarding strains or something from carrying the laptop?

Can't help you with your broken tab problem, but i have a 10 yr old toshiba satellite that i'm on right now that i used to replace fans in every 2/3 years or so. They would make more and more noise and then fail completely and i would buy a new one every time. The last two or so I couldn't find new anymore for less than $30 so i took it apart and on the 'axle' of the fan blade assy i put a little (like barely a dab) of all-purpose wheel grease and its been going strong, no noise, no failures. I lube it up annually to keep noise down while i'm redoing thermals, heatsink cleaning dust, etc. inside.

Hi, yesterday my laptop started to turn off out of nothing. I got scared and disassembled it again. I found that the reason why one screw wouldn't hold was that this lillte thing where the screw should sit was broken off.

I assume this has been like this for a while and me pulling out the screw caused it to move away from its original position. I fixed it with magic glue and re-assembled the laptop. I don't have this ugly gap anymore (or if, then to a much smaller extent). Keep your fingers crossed that this solved the turning off problem.

    Hi,

one more question: Is there anything that I could have done wrong when cleaning the fan to cause the laptop to get hotter? It appears to me that it is louder and hotter in normal working mode now :-(
