    Hi,
I have been given a acer 5315 to diagnose and repair.
The laptop was very spurious with heat it is sometimes fine and other times it overheats and cuts outthe fan is working and doing its job and the machine has no dust clogging it up yet the problem persists.
I think it is a common BIOS problem causing the fan to behave eratically. Its running BIOS v1.33 and i am upgrading to the latest version on the acer website which is v1.44 i think i am reluctant to do this as i know its possible to brick the machine any advice as to what else i could try or whether im worrying about nothing?

What are the CPU temps like when idle and around the time before it will turn off? Have you considered reapplying the thermal paste on the CPU?

I have done hasnt made any difference. I noticed the fan wont go fast at all, i dont have anything to gauge the temp but it can run being demanded for hours and be fine then you restart it do nothing and it gradually overheats there isnt any logic in the way it behaves, there is a lot of heat coming off the network card next to the processor i noticed also.

Programs called HWMonitor or Core Temp should be able to give you the CPU temperature.
