Hi everyone,
I just took my Acer 5745g-7671 laptop apart and found a socket rPGA-989. Currently I have an Intel Core i3 370m ( IntelĀ® Core? i3-370M Processor (3M cache, 2.40 GHz)) with an HM55 chipset ( Mobile IntelĀ® HM55 Express Chipset).
So my goal is to upgrade the i3 to an i5 or i7 processor. Am I right in assuming that because the current processor has a PGA988 socket, any other processor with a PGA988 socket will be compatible? I know that the HM55 has a list of compatible processors, which is accessible by clicking the "compatible products" link on the left side of the page I linked to earlier. Would any processor on that list be compatible with my computer?
Also, the laptop has a hybrid graphics card arrangement, intel graphics through the i3, and a nVidia card that only turns on when nessecary. What would happen if I replaced the i3 with a processor that does not have integrated graphics? Would the BIOS not post or would the computer just automatically use the nVidia card?
I would greatly appreciate anyone who can clear up what specifications are required for the new processor to be compatible with my computer. Thanks!

Yes, any 1st gen processor compatable with HM55 will work for you.
The 5745g also comes in a variant with the i7 quad core, so I would guess your cooling system will handle a hotter cpu fine.
Someone may correct me on this, but you should be ok if you went for a quad without the integrated graphics as it 'should' automatically use your integrated graphics card. The 5745G-724G64Mn uses an i7-720m with a dedicated card and is esssentially the same package as yours. -
Ok, thanks very much. Obviously I would like as much power as possible. So this information is very helpful.
If someone else can agree/disagree about whether the computer will automatically use the nVidia card that would be great. My only concern with this proposed arrangement is that the quad processors use 10 more watts and I imagine that using the nVidia card will also draw a lot more watts than using the internal graphics. So using a quad processor might kill the battery life.
The quad processors would also create a lot more heat, so I am not sure which one I will go for. Can anybody chime in and provide their more educated opinion?
