First of all ide like to say hi to every one and thanks to any one who helps me. Heres my problem, ive been looking at what laptop to get for about 2 weeks now and ive narrowed it down to 2 (i think) its either the Acer 5930G or the Samsung R560. After playing on the acer 5930G in john lewis i decided i dont mind that its uglier than the R560 but i was just wondering would it be possible to upgrade the DDR2 ram to DDR3 or would the mother board not support this upgrade?

Nope, wouldn't work. The slots for DDR2 and DDR3 are incompatible.

nope, different slots. one's SO-DIMM 200pin (that would be DDR2), and the other SO-DIMM 204pin (DDR3). so you're out of luck.

What is the dilemma? I think I can guess. Your thinking you want DDR3?

The main and almost only real advantage of DDR3 vs DDR2 with Intel mobile platforms is power consumption and heat production. At this time with available CL's on the DDR2 PC6400 vs DDR3 PC8500 and Intel memory controller the bandwidth is for all but benchmarks the same.

With out any knowledge of upcoming products. JEDEC has made a standard for DDR2 PC8500 so maybe in the future we will see SO-DIMM's? And since the fastest FSB (Intel) mobile is 1066M\T's RAM any faster would just clock down. That would get rid of all advantage except heat and power consumption.

I just bought a Montevina with a Txxx and DDR2. I researched and am aware Pxxx and DDR3 would be better on battery but with my budget sacrifices had to be made. I did not sacrifice on performance.

Depending on your needs I hope you can find an acceptable compromise. Good luck. :)

DDR3 Would Be Better Overall Because Of The Higher Speeds And Lower Temps

Yes but would be cost effective and would it provide noticeable performance improvements over DDR2? At least at this early stage in DDR3's life.

Be careful when you only talk of speed when discussing RAM. Consider CL also. And I will tell you from the benchmarks I have seen less than 5% difference in bandwidth between DDR2 PC6400 and DDR3 PC8500 on Montevina.

Yes I concede DDR3 wins power consumption/heat. Higher speeds are offset/mitigated by higher Cas Latency (timings in general).

And at this point DDR3 above PC8500 are useless with Montevina. Just consider. And yes I would like DDR3 but really it is what it is and the benefits are not there speed wise at this point. When they lower the CL sure. But at that point the Nehelm will be out and we will have so much more to feel short on, you now not the fastest system and all. ;) :)
