My current laptop came with an i5-2450, which I know is 2nd generation Sandy Bridge. The 7750g comes with an HM65 chipset motherboard, which I believe to be P7YE0. When I look up the information on the HM65, I understand I can upgrade to an i7-2630qm, 2670qm, 2720qm, 2760qm, among other Second Generation quad core Sandy Bridge processors. However, information I have found also indicates the HM65 chipset to also be compatible with what appears to be third generation QE (embedded?) Ivy Bridge cpu's. These would be the i7-3610QE, 3612QE, and 3615QE.

I'm not familiar with the QE processors, and they are listed as embedded cpu's. Are these processors available to buy and install? Does anyone have any information on this? Thank you for any assistance

    Sincerely,
    Paul J.

I believe these processors are only sold to manufacturers, but they may appear on eBay from time to time. There are two versions of them, however - the normal PGA (which has pins and can be installed by anyone in a compatible socket), and BGA (which doesn't have pins and needs to be soldered with professional equipment).

But even if you find one, there's no guarantee it will work since it also requires proper BIOS support and a compatible power supply on the motherboard (I read they are slightly different between Sandy and Ivy bridge).

    Hey Paul,

There's some info here on the suffix nomenclature: DailyTech - Intel Officially Unleashes Its Second Gen Core i-Series CPUs on the World.

Intel: "Embedded Options Available indicates products that offer extended purchase availability for intelligent systems and embedded solutions."

Here's info on what an embedded system is: Embedded system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They should be available to purchase, but availability is another story compared to a qm processor.
