Hi. I am considering upgrading the Sempron single core chip in this Aspire 3050-1150 laptop with a Turion double core. It takes an S1 socket, and can support TL-50, TL-52, TL-56 and TL-60. Pulled chips can be obtained pretty cheaply on EBay. Also, the BIOS versions are the same for the Aspire 3050 and the Aspire 5050 (which is what this will be upgraded to with the new CPU). I have a service manual, but will likely take it to a local shop which said they'll charge $50.00 (I supply the CPU) to do the installation. (I am pretty tech-capable, but just don't feel comfortable disassembling the whole laptop).
My question is, what will I have to do AFTER the new CPU is installed? (For example, will I have to reinstall Windows Vista Home Basic? Format the hard drive? Could any other software be affected?, etc.)
I have 2 Gigs of RAM, which seems fine, and will also upgrade to a larger faster (360GB; 7200) hard drive later. I will also ad a laptop cooler for the potential higher temps.
Any help, advice, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Upgrading the cpu does not require anything. You do not need to reinstall the operating system or anything. Its a direct install.
The upgrade should be fine as long as you are sure your system uses socket S1.
Their are a lot of single core turions which use mobile socket 754.
The only thing you need to do is:
1) upgrade the BIOS to the latest revision before the cpu upgrade.
2) find a good price on a TL series cpu
3) get someone who knows what they are doing to install it.
4) enjoy your new cpu.
You can upgrade your hard drive, but their are no 360gb drives.
Their are 320gb and 500Gb 7200rpm mobile drives.
Good places to look are newegg, zipzoomfly and tiger direct for good prices on hard drives.

Thanks alot K-Tron. I appreciate it. One more question...I am using v.1.3302 BIOS.
I notice that Acer-PanAmerica (USA) has 1.3302 as the latest version, but Acer Euro has a different version (1.3315). Should I upgrade to the Euro BIOS, or stay with the USA BIOS? -
I would think your BIOS is new enough to recognize the new cpu's. I wouldnt recommend installing a European Bios, the wording may be very different in the Bios.
