Hello I have a acer aspire 3680-2682 laptop, I have about filled up the 80gb hard drive i was wondering what are the limitations to how many GB i can put in.
    I would like to put in a 7200 rpm in a 500gb or a 320gb.
any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

oh yea I have been looking at the wd scorpio black

You seem to have eliminated the SSD option and I can see why...You need lot's of space...
Yes you can put 500 gb in that notebook, and your choice of HHD is excellent.Just don't expect any spectacular increase in speed from the 7200rpms.

hey thanks for the reply, that is something i have been going back and forth with what do you think would be a better idea a 5400rpm 500gb vs 7200 320gb the price is pretty close

thank you I forgot to mention that i upgraded the cpu to a Intel Core Duo Processor T2250 2M Cache, 1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB so I dont have that celeron in there anymore, but it probably still isn't worth the 7200rpm is it?

It's a personal choice..Myself i would go for the 500 HDD without a second thought..Like I said I don't thing the bump in speed from the 7200rpm is worth it.Besides they tend to be more noisy and consume more battery.

Definitely worth the 7200rpm! I've upgraded to a T5500 in my 3680-2682, with a Seagate 500GB 7200.4, and I have to say it's no slouch. If it weren't for that weak GMA950, this would be a completely awesome notebook still. I've had mine since "back-to-school" season of '06, and although it's taken a beating, it's still one of the most reliable notebooks I've ever bought!

I may have to just flip a coin to decide wd or seagate thats a tough choice

Western Digital Black/Blue all the way. You don't want to have to worry every day.. "What if my HDD fails?!" because the 7200.4's have a storied history. I just didn't know they were having problems till after I bought mine. But it is still going just fine, so I hope I got a good one.

    In order of fastest performance:
    1. Seagate Momentus XT 500GB
    2. WD5000BEKT 500GB
    3. Hitachi 7K500 500GB

The soon expected Seagate 7200.5 750GB might change this order.

IMO, best upgrade for this is 320GB WD scropio blue... this laptop really won't be able to use SATA 2 bandwidth.

Hey guys I just wanted to let everyone know how it went, I bought the wd scorpio blue 500gb hard drive, I decided more space rather than speed and im glad i did this hard drive is quite a bit faster than the old 80gb i took out.
this hard drive is pretty quiet and runs cool, installation went very smooth with acronis true image wd edition, it was fast and easy.
Im sure the scorpio Black could have been faster but since i dont really do any gaming on this laptop i decided that more space would be more useful for me personally
