I have a Aspire 5101 with a turion64 mk36 @ 2 GHz Socket S1, and i want to make a upgrade to a Turion64 X2 @1.8 ghz ... the question is .... is this possible ?? does my motherboard support the new processor ???

No, it is not possible.
-
I thought it was possible, but a guy on here already tried this procedure and it did not work too well for him. He does not know if it was a borked replacement cpu or what. I would get a new harddrive or more memory if you want to speed up your system. It is usually cheaper and better to do this since most single core laptops cannot be upgraded to a dual core processor.

yeah but the 5102 Aspire has the same motherboard if i'm not mistaken and it has a dual core @1,6 ghz .... plus i already have 2 GB RAM ...
-
I might have cheap 1.6 x2 comeing up if you instrested
-
i'm interested more in a 1.8 processor ... plus i'm from romania

Yay, a fellow Romanian!!!

) but still... has anyone tried ?? the 5102 has a dualcore processor and the same x1100 cipset ... so they have to use the same motherboard....that's why i think it's possible to upgrade to a dual core processor
-
I don't know why, but you wouldn't be able to upgrade to a dual-core system - it might be the physical socket, the BIOS, or the chipset, but I'm not exactly sure. I've never heard of it working on either an AMD or Intel system.

The 5100 use sis chipset
the 5102 use ati chipset -

Theoretically, your system shouldn't have any problems running the TX2 since they use the same socket and typically manufacturers use similar heatsinks across the same model series and the cooling system should be capable of handling the extra heat output. But, the big question is whether the BIOS/motherboard supports the TX2 or not. This is a bit harder to determine 100% but Acer did offer the Aspire 5101 series(LX.ABH05.237) with the Turion X2 and that should have the same hardware as your system. Also, AMD has released newer revisions of the Turion(65nm rev G) processors which might not be supported by the BIOS. I would look around for the 90nm rev F cpu's which have a higher chance of working rather than the newer revisions.
Again, its no guarantee but buy the replacement cpu from a place which will allow you to return as that will allow you to test the cpu without loosing too much money. -
the problem is that in romania you don't have where to buy a laptop processor and i have to by it on ebay ... it cost's about 70$ ... but i will keep in mind what you said about the newer versions of AMD's processor's, by the way i forgot to mention that i have the latest bios and compatibility with the latest processors shouldn't be a problem

don't know ... where can i look to find the No.??
