hi, i have an Acer Aspire 6920G Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5750 2GHz, 3GB RAM, DDR2 SDRAM laptop with a product model No: 6920G-6A3G25Bn and a PM965 Express chipset with a bus speed of 667MHz and a Mobility Radeon HD 3650 GPU. would it be possible to upgrade from T5750 to t9300/t9500 without problem. i'm new to the forum and would appreciate any advice. thanks

yes that should be no problem at all.

you can also upgrade your graphics card to an ati 4650 (expensive) or a nvidia 9600m gt (just bought 21 of them if you want one)

thanks niffcreature, as for the GPU, i'll address that at a later date as i'm on a tight budget at the mo. i've found a T9300 SLAZB for a reasonable price, what is the difference between that and SLAYY and other versions of this CPU ? is one more compatible than the others? i'm slightly confused!

Any 800 FSB Core 2 Duo is compatible with GM/PM 965 chipset. You should also be able to go to 8 GB RAM.

I'd get a mod to move this to the Acer subforum. Several users have successfully upgraded their CPU, GPU, HDD, memory, screen - just about everything in it! They'll better be able to help you with specifics about any upgrade questions you have.

T9300 and T9500 should be no problem at all (but not all 800 MHz FSB CPUs - some require a 4 Series chipset).
For information on upgrading the GPU, check the Acer MXM thread for ideas and advice.
8GB of RAM might not be possible, but 4GB certainly is. You'd only need one stick of 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM to do it, too.

Regarding SLAYY vs. SLAZB, go for SLAYY. According to Intel, SLAZB is the version of the T9300 that's designed to be soldered onto motherboards, and won't have pins on it (BGA vs. PGA).

Do you use your PC for gaming? I don't want to be presumptuous, but if thats the case, go for GPU upgrade first... If its overall system speed your looking to improve, I suggest and SSD. CPUs are rarely a bottleneck, but maybe your doing a lot of compiling, or VMs?

hi tehsuigi. thanks for the info but after trawling a few forums and mod sites i came across this mini guide. hope it helps many newbies like myself.

    SLAYY-VID=1.050v-1.137v PGA
    SLAZB-VID=1.00v-1.250v PGA
    SLAQG-VID=1.062v-1.150v PGA
    SLAPV-VID=1.00v-1.250v BGA

If you don't know BGA (ball grid array) means you can't change it is soldered. The SLAPV is BGA. What you want is the SLAZB, it is PGA (pin grid array) and has the lowest "v" which is good! The SLAYY is second best with low "v". The SLAQG is a little higher. Will this affect your system? Or will the BIOS adjust? I don't know. But those are the differences between the CPU's. All else is the same.

classic77, i use a lot of cpu draining programmes and i'm planning on upgrading the SSD along with the CPU upgrade. i intend to use the lappy for moderate gaming only. thanks for all the advice and info. its much appreciated:D

The voltage doesn't affect anything a lot. Your system will have no problem with it whatsoever.

Actually you are wrong, SLAYY is the best because you want to look at the max voltage of 1.137v
Also (not trying to shoot down your discoveries or anything :p) but there are a few 'BGA' specified CPUs that can be found mounted on PGA adapters. Its pretty weird, see :D

those aren't my views or opinions of the various t9300 versions. i purely copied and pasted an extract from a techs guide on upgrading a CPU.

having trawled hundreds of posts/sites,this was the only guide i could find. i'm a complete noobie when it comes to anything regarding CPU mods/upgrades <?p> <see my avatar? thats a genuine x-ray of my cranium showing the extent of my computer knowledge! lol

thanks again for the very helpful advice.

I was just saying that SLAYY is better than SLAZB because the CPU under load will be at a lower voltage. So whatever techs guide you found was not entirely accurate, or it was based on the mindset that people aren't using their cpus at their full frequency most of the time.

i took your advice and purchased a T9300 SLAYY CPU from ebay for £82.00 . thanks for your advice. just one more thing(well two actually)

what is the best GPU to replace the HD3650 with? or is this adequate for gaming eg-crysis etc on low settings?

and in your valued opinion, is it best to replace the 3gb ram with a 4gb card or just replace the 1gb with a 2gb to upgrade to 4?

sorry to be a pain but look at my avatar/profile pic. that's a genuine x-ray of my cranium showing the extent of my computer tech knowledge! lol.

    thanks again.

What programs are you using specifically? If they're memory intensive programs, replace the 1GB stick with a 4GB one for 6GB total. Else 3GB won't perform much different than 4GB.

The best GPU you can go to is a 4650 maybe 4670, which is around 200$.
your nvidia options are a lot cheaper, the 9600m GT ddr3 is not a lot worse and only 100$ or so.

I think either will be a pretty big upgrade.
