I bought a used Acer Travelmate 4000 series for my son. The screen stays blank even though everything is theorically working (HDD, CD reader etc.) I plugged in a regular screen but it also appears blank. Should I reset the BIOS? Or change the videocard? How do I reset the BIOS? Thx for your help if you can...

You cannot change the video card, it is integrated on the mainboard. If you cannot see any thing on screen, you are unable to reset the BIOS. Probably, the video device or something relate to hardware is defective. Try to contact your local service center to fix it.

No kidding. So what you are telling me is that the videocard is ONBOARD so they would have to change the whole motherboard???

That is distinct possibillity. Since no signal is being output through the VGA port, my gut feeling is that the video card is faulty.
I can't for sure say that the video card is part of the motherboard, but even if it wasn't you would first have to procure the right video card and then tear down the notebook to replace it.
