Acer tech support blows after warranty. They tell me my 4220 cpu, T1350, can't be upgraded. Does anyone know, if with the latest bios, I couldn't upgrade the cpu to a faster socket m 478 like a T2450 or faster? Thanks for the help. I just don't want to buy a new laptop yet and socket m chips are pretty cheap.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Google suggests that the 4220 has a standard 945 chipset in which case you should be able to use any Socket M processor given appropriate BIOS support.

That's a wise decision. I think sometimes we're conditioned to think newer is better, but for most things, a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo offers plenty of performance. I bought my X200, not because I wanted a newer machine, but because I wanted something more portable. My R60, which would be akin to your Acer, is still a very good notebook for day to day usage.

go for the T5200 or the T5300 as they are faster and newer than the T2450.
If you're willing to spend about £60, check the T7200 in ebay. It is an excellent all arounder CPU
-
I doubt there's much of a difference between a T2450 and a T5200 or T5300. The important thing is to go dual core. The real benefit of going with a T5200 or the like is if you want to run a 64 bit OS.
-
isn't the T2450 a rebadged T2500?
I had the T2500, T5300, and T7200 on the same laptop. The T5300 was about 20 to 30% fasted than the T2500 when benchmarked in Sandra
If the OP uses his laptop for word processing, the internet, listing music, watching DVDs... he's likely to not notice the difference between his T1350 and any dual core CPU (if his OS is XP). That said upgrading his CPU to a dual core one is still a good idea
EDIT:
The T2450 is not a rebadged T2500. It is slightly slower than the T2500 because it uses a 133Mhz FSB while the T2500 uses a 166Mhz FSB

Thanks all, this laptop has xp pro so upgrading the cpu will be nice. You can a 2450 for about $50 so it's a better option for me. At that time Acer was also travelmates with 2450's and I know the mb was used in a few models.
I currently have a gig a ram, ram is cheap so I will upgrade it to 2, so $100 I will have a much better machine rather than spend 4-5 bills.
thanks again -
I once got a T5200 for $6.
-
My fix is a t2450 runs at 533 so does the t1350 so should be less bios issues. 2 gig crucial ram at 667 unlike my 1 gig 533. So should speed things up a tad for not a lot a loot. Thanks again

The difference is 64bit compatibility and VT i think.
-
Those mean very little to most notebook users.
-
Means quite a lot if u use Virtual Machines
-
I bet the % of people who use virtual machines is closer to zero than three.
-
I'm with ZAZ, 64bit doesn't mean alot. I played with virtualbox with 32bit and 64bit CPUs on a 32bit OS (WinXP) and it worked like a sharm
.
So I don't see all the fase about 64bits. 64bit is nice only when you have 4GB or ram or more. That said, few 32bit linux distros (if not all of them) and Windows Server 2003 (native 32bit OS) support more than 4GB of ram
.
What's the size of a process allocated space in Windows Vista/7 64bit? isn't 4GB too? -
Well i don't know.. 10%+ of the ppl here use virtual machines...
-
I would agree people here are more likely to use VMs, but where did you come up with 10%? That seems high to me.
-
Maybe we should do a poll?
-
That's a good idea
-
Maybe we should not throw out numbers without any way to verify our claims? Unless you strictly control the survey population the resulting numbers have little validity. It's polling 101. A poll taken here is open to anyone, it does not control the survey population.

I've started a poll =D
May be a bit bias because the majority of people here are quite techy and have a higher chance of using VMs -
well so far , for this forum its 75%+...
-
Unless everyone on this forum is forced to do the poll, then your survey result would not mean very much.
-
well it still is quite accurate
... u can't do a census realistically speaking...

Acer tech support does blow. I have the same laptop, and recently upgraded my cpu as well. With the latest BIOS, I upgraded from a Core Solo T1350 to a Core 2 Duo T7200. I would have gone for a bit faster, but the prices on ebay were pretty high for those.
So far, its working pretty well, it does get a bit warmer, but doesn't burn my hand. Definitely seems to load faster
You've probably already upgraded your CPU, but I figured this may help in the future.Starlight5 likes this.
