Follow the order of laptop upgrading:
    1)Ram
    2)HD
    3)CPU

so just max out your ram, and buy the hm160hc hd, which is the fastest pata one available. then if you need more speed, make sure your current cpu isn't soldered, and find a compatible replacement.

Are you sure it's burn marks on the CPU?

For the CPU upgrade you should go for the Pentium M 725 (1.6ghz with 2MB cache) or the Pentium M 735 (1.7ghz with 2MB). you could find these in ebay for a cheap price. The Pentium M 755 and M 765 (2ghz and 2.1ghz) are usually expensive.

An alternative to the CPU upgrade is overclocking using something like SetFSB.

I think your chipset can only operate with the older generation of Pentium M processors. Newer ones with 2 MB of L2 cache may not work correctly. The best way to tell is to see if the BIOS can support those processors.

It may be possible with a BIOS update, the notebook can utilise the newer Pentium M processors. BIOS updates are normally on the manufacturers website, and they should also list all the processors they support.

A Pentium M 7*5 series (e.g. 705, 715, 725...) with an FSB of 400MHz will work at its normal speed. This means a Pentium M 735 which is designed to work at 1.7Ghz will work at 1.7ghz in your laptop.

A Pentium M 7*0 series (eg. 730, 740...) with an FSB of 533MHz will work at a slower speed since you laptop chipset works at 400MHz. For example a pentium M740 designed to work at 1.73Mhz will work at 1.3Ghz in your laptop. The M 7*0 series processors will run 25% slower in your laptop.

In other words buy a M 7*5 processor such as the M 735

    still confused.
i have search intel webpage. M705 only comes with 130nm only so does it mean i have to look for a 130nm processor chip?
Another question is the 1MB L2 cache mean i can get any processor with 7*5?

On the manufacturer's website, under the support pages of the notebook, it should list all BIOS updates. Under the BIOS's listed, it should mention any change in hardware, such as updates on which processors will now be compatible with the notebook.

I would make sure of this before upgrading the processor. Its best to know for certain which processors the notebook will work with, rather than find later on that the processor you bought will not work because of some incompatibility.

Upgrading your cpu, to a 100-200Mhz faster one is not going to show much of a performance increase.
Your harddrive is the reason your system is slow. a 60gb 4200rpm drive is going to have a bandwidth of 16-18mb/sec which is pretty slow.
Your system uses PATA/ATA/IDE laptop harddrives, so as jisaac mentioned, get the Samsung HM160HC, as it is currently the fastest harddrive which will work in your laptop. It can do 52mb/sec.
I bought the Hm160HC and reviewed it myself, and it is infact the fastest PATA/ATA drive.
    Here is my review:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=264209

For $75 it will make your laptop perform 3-4x faster than it currently does.
1.25Gb of memory is fine, you may want to upgrade to 2gb, but if you have XP it is not needed. A harddrive upgrade is definitely a must if you want to speed her up.
I wouldnt waste money on a faster cpu, unless you can get one for less than $30.
