what chipsets do these run?? can I upgrade the cpu to a faster or different type??

I bought two last night from the local bestbuy and have already determined that vista is trash and tonight when I get home I'll be doing complete fresh installs of xp on both. I'm also just going to upgrade both to 1gb of ram.

I was already searching on here about drive upgrades so I'm good there.

I'm just curious what kind of cpu upgrades I can possibly reserve for the future for these things.

Depends on the chipset being used and if the Acer BIOS is capable of supporting Core/Core 2 series processors. If the system has the i940 series chipset then you are pretty much stuck with the Celeron M's but if it has the i945 series chipset then an upgrde to a Core/Core2 should be possible. As for as the BIOS support I would suggest to look around for other Acer laptops with the Core series processors and use the same BIOS as in your system.

cool, I'll run a scan on one of them tonight to find out which chipset they have.

I found a neat little online hardware scanner a few years back that I like to use here:

    http://www.powerleap.com/PL-iP3T.jsp#

it's the upgrade configurator. easiest thing I've found that will tell me chipset, etc.

anyone happen to know offhand which chipset these use so I dont get my hopes up all day long

Yeah but dont expect massive performance improvements, the Celeron M's go upto 2GHz and the performance improvement is not that great. I would suggest keeping the current Celeron and maxing out the RAM and get a faster 7200rpm HDD which should yield some noticable benefits for general use.

Umm, I'm no Vista fanboy, as I despise it and still use XP 24/7, but you realize that Vista is gonna run like absolute crap on the 512mb of memory that you have in there. Maybe you should try Vista after the upgrade in memory, I'm sure you'll have a much different experience.

Isnt the 520 fast enough? Based on a Core so it shouldnt be too slow... The 520 is a socket M chip so you can stick in the 530 which is a 1.73GHz chip but the 540 (2GHz) is socket P like a santa rosa C2D so that's not compaible, so upgrades to the celeron you can do are minimal.

As it's socket M you might be able to stick a first-gen Core 2 Duo in it, with a BIOS flash and some luck!

intel 945 - socket M. Based on this you should I think be able to swap in a Core 2 Duo but that's just a guess. As your current cpu is based on the merom core (Core 2 Duo architecture) you might be able to swap in a Core 2 Duo but this might require a bios flash.
