Is it possible to buy generic DVRW drive to replace the CDRW/DVD combo of a laptop ?
How can I know if the drive i'm buying is compatible?

Yes, but the problem with most is they use a non-standard bezel, so it's hard to replace with one off the shelf.

Prefer the NEC 6650 at NewEgg myself. Sometimes you can snap the old one off or cut the new one. What laptop is it?

I intend to do it on a IBM T40P or a HP/Compaq NX8220

Is bezel the plastic part on the front tray ?
There is this Pioneer DVR-K05 , slot in drive that look absolutely awesome!
Could it arrange the bezel problem you are talking about? -
Yes, that's what I'm referring to.
