Hi guys, I just joined this forum!

I had a newb query, and need help with upgrading my laptop's GPU. I have a MSI GT-60 0NC which came with a GTX 670m originally. However the GPU got busted and I have to replace it now. I was thinking of getting an upgrade in the form of a GTX 680M (or a 860m or a 770m) which is within my budget. Can you tell me which of these 3 GPUs will actually be 'compatible' with my laptop? Will there be any power, driver or temperature issues? Also where can I get these components for the best price?

    Any help would be great!

680m unless you can find a maxwell 860m. Telltale sign is 2gb VRAM. 4gb VRAM version is Kepler which is weaker than the 680m.

So I couldn't find a 860M which is within my budget in the first place so nevermind :p

    I shortlisted these 2:

New for Dell Alienware M18x R2 nVIDIA GTX 680M SLI Graphics Card 20HTK N13E GTX A2 90 day warranty-in Graphics Cards from Electronics on Aliexpress.com

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M 3GB DDR5 for Clevo Alienware Upgrademonkey | eBay

Will both of these fit in place of my old 670M? Will they have any VBIOS/BIOS incompatibilities or any issues? The first one mentions it's for Alienware M18x R2 only, so I hope that won't cause an issue since the chip is the same (N13E GTX A2).

So I bought a 680M and installed it in my GT60. Booted up my windows, and tried to install drivers. Nvidia couldn't find compatible hardware! :(
    Any help here?

You have to mod the inf files of the drivers... Look on the MSI forum and they have quite a bit about this on the AW forum...

Did that, and ended up with the display flashing and turning off on a loop. Had to reinstall windows after that.
Finally I found drivers edited by someone called Dox. But they are 306, which is almost like 2 years old. Still don't know how to install the latest drivers though.

I think your best off dropping a thread on the MSI forum and searching on google on moding INF files.. You can also try this thread/forum...

Thing is I got a Dell 2GB 680M. Not the MSI/Clevo 4GB variant. So yes I've already been looking at Alienware forums, but no breakthrough as of now. My GPU is running fine on 2 year old drivers, but I'm sure I'll see performance increase with the latest drivers. Also a query, if you could help me out:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.0407.01F2.1028% = Section003, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0407&SUBSYS_01F21028

In this line, the first is the GPU string and the last bit is the PCI Device string you get from Device Manager. What is the Section bit supposed to mean? I have a feeling that that's the part I'm messing up.

I'm not sure whether Dell cards will properly work in MSI machines. I know they don't work in Clevos. (or properly anyway, I've seen reports of people being able to boot and even load Windows with a Dell card, but there's always something that's messed up, like not being to change brightness for example) Maybe drop a line to Meaker since he's the expert on this subject.

Well the card is working perfectly fine for me, except for occasional random stutters.
