I will have a new Fujitsu T4020, which comes with 512 SDRAM and has an open slot. I can put another 512 in there, or 1024. Thus the total would be either 1 gb or 1.5 gb. Is 1.5 overkill?

Also, does it matter what brand this is, assuming it meets the specs? E.g., is Kingston or Crucial better than generic?

Finally, any preferred on-line sources for this? Thanks!

1Gb is fine for most people and going 1.5GB is not going to improve the performance considerably.

Brand is important for reliability and quality. Generic versions are generally not as reliable as branded memory but are generally cheaper. Get branded memory if you can afford it.Most major manufacturers have memory configurators online and they will list compatible memory for your laptop. Check them out before buying memory.

Newegg, Zipzoomfly are pretty good places to buy memory.
