I wanted to use my desktop monitor, a 5:4 18" Dell Screen as an external screen space and it's maximum resolution is 1280x1024. The current screen I'm using on my laptop is 1920x1200, my goal is to be able to use my laptop as the primary screen with the start bar and all that. I just want to use the additional monitor to put things like TweetDeck, AIM and Facebook over there.

Is it possible to do this and I'm just doing this wrong? Because when I attach the monitor and "Extend the Display" the primary screen with the desktop and all the bars goes onto the additional monitor with nothing really on the regular monitor.

The laptop I'm using is the Dell Inspiron 1520 with Intel C2D T9300 and nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT and 6GB of DDR2-RAM.

you need to select the 'primary' one which is where the task bar goes. In this case, your notebook needs to be the primary.
