I did yesterday buy a new Toshiba C55-B5299 for $220 at Office Depot now my question is that what screws do I need to remove so I can put 8GB of ram?

The notebook I have doesn't have any cover to remove the memory only so that's why I need to know what screws to remove. I might have to remove all of the screws since the bottom is just once piece. I wish Toshiba made it the same way as before with having the lid cover to remove the ram but on there newer lighter weight ones and also they are thinner but can't remove the lid as easily meaning there is no place to just remove the memory. But does anyone know what screws that will remove just the lid and not other things?

Show us the picture of the bottom so others can tell you where to take it off? But blacking the Serial and Product Key if those numbers are on there.

Before you crack it open, check underneath the keyboard (usually just 3 screws + connector to remove)

I did post two pics but I don't understand what you mean by blacking the serial and product key. I just took normal pics of it just now but is that ok? Anyways maybe now you can tell me how to get the lid opened since according to Toshiba it says not user upgradeable. Also the battery is not user replaceable.

I attached the PDF files that shows the specs.

The memory is probably soldered to the board.

Well I saw on some forums that say that you can replace the ram but have to remove all screws but I just don't know if you really have to remove every screws that is on the lid. I just want to make sure I don't remove the motherboard out or so when I take the screws out.

Wolfdog0, remove the battery first, than screws on the back. You obviously need to remove them all in order to remove the cover. Don't worry, motherboard won't pop out with the cover, it's safely attached, just don't apply much force while disassembling.

Well if its really suppose to be that easy to remove the lid by taking the screws off why does Toshiba say that its not user upgradeable and need a tech to do it for me? Also if for real just by removing the screws for the battery why does it say not user replaceable when you need to change the battery?

Is it too hard for most people to remove screws? Or I wonder what's the reason.

Wow so you only need to remove screws and Toshiba says you need a tech? lol Is this hard for most people to do this? I just think its strange that Toshiba says I need a tech to do this apparently most people don't know how to take screws off?

Pretty sure, there is another free ram slot in your laptop. So you can keep the old one and you're going to have 10gig.

One thing I am worried about is that if I take it apart and replace the memory will it void the warranty? If so probably should not do it unless do you guys think its ok to put 8GB stick? I know that this notebook only has one slot not two like the video. On a another forums someone said it only has one slot for this series.

Wolfdog0, you void warranty by simply opening it, so what? If something bad happens, put back the 2GB module and don't mention you disassembled it. :) You should do it, because 2GB RAM is ridiculous. Oh, and it'd perform much better if you replace that 500GB drive with SSD. ;)

From my perception, you're not taking your laptop apart. You just remove the back cover for upgrading. Also, I never see "warranty void if opened'' sticker in the back cover of my laptops.

No, it's because they don't consider end-users capable of removing the motherboard. That is, however, exactly what it entails to replace the memory bank on this model: Toshiba Satellite C55-B5299 Motherboard.

Look at the battery connector and DC adapter near the bottom left and the 3x USB ports at the top right. To align the mb to your laptop's layout it means the memory bank (and bga cpu) are at the bottom. Now this is where buying the cheapest of the series is a bit of a drawback; a slightly more expensive model of the C55 would've featured a bottom cover here. Regardless, the procedure is similar to this Acer Aspire V3-572.

So ... basically ... yes, remove all screws, except those of the hinges; the display lid can stay attached. Though you need to disconnect the lcd cable from the mb. Same with the keyboard+cable.

To be exhaustive, there's one easier method; take a wire cutter and slice out part of the base, replace bank and glue some type of replacement sheet back over the new DIY-access port ... (don't take that too seriously ... :D). Would work just as well, though ... and a lot faster. Not sure what they'd make of the warranty then ;) ...

Well I wanted to know is that is removing the cover and to get the memory out and put new one in is going to be the same the video that SteveT posted? Meaning just removing the cover will show right away the memory slot? Or is the inside different than the video? If its different will it be harder to get to the memory slot than the video?

No, you're right; you have the same layout as the example in the video. Save that you only have one memory slot, not two. This is actually quite easy and a big improvement over the old Toshibas.
