I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a second hard disk I bought and fitted myself. If I get a Studio 17, will I be able to fit this hard disk into the second bay in there? As far as I'm aware the disk itself should be okay, but the caddy might be slightly different for that model - is that right? If so I'll just buy a new caddy or modify this one - otherwise I'll be £100 down for this hard disk!

    Thanks :)

The Studio 17 has a slot loading drive, so I'm not quite sure how you're going to replace the drive with a caddy though... Nor have I heard of any hard drive caddy being available for the Studio XPS series either.

Sorry I'm not quite sure what you mean. I know the DVD drive is slot-loading, but what does that mean for a hard disk?

I found this image of what the hard disk caddy in the Studio 17 looks like, and it looks similar to mine:

ETA: sorry should this be in the inspiron section?

Sorry. I was thinking of a different model. I forgot that the Studio 17 supports dual hard drives. It may fit/work assuming it has the correct size/connection. I'd say give Dell a call when you plan on purchasing it and ask if it would work.

Thanks Hirohata :) I don't have much faith in their tech support though...

You most likely need to purchase a secondary caddy for your studio 17. Do not buy them through Dell, as they are a rip off.
Try ebay, and run a google shopping search

while the sata adaptor is likely the same, the metal bracket definately doesnt fit . 2nd hard drive assembly of sutio 17 costs only $10.99 on dell.usa, that includes screws/mount/connector.

Thanks for your replies. So the drive size will still be the same, presumably? (2.5 in?)

Ofcourse, it's very very rare that notebooks uses anything else than 2.5"

Ehm.... Currently there are many ultra portable notebooks which use 1.8" drive. But yes, Studio 17 secondary HDD uses 2.5".

I don't know for sure whether Studio 17's secondary HDD caddy is the same one as Inspiron 1720's, but the writing outside the box of my Studio 17's secondary HDD caddy says it is also for Vostro & Latitude (not mentioned which exact model), 9.5mm or less, SATA.
