Hi all,
I currently have a Advent 7090 which has a CPU slot of Socket mPGA479M, it currently is running a 1.7GHZ CPU which I am considering upgrading to a CD CPU. What is the fastest dual core CPU I can put in there and how easier is it to change?
I have built plently of desktop computers over the years, but never done much more on a laptop than change HD and upgrading RAM, I presume I would also have to change the cooler as well?
Secondly have MS fixed the 915GM Chipset for Vista (what my laptop has)?
Thanks

First MS does not make chipsets so they are unlikely to fix them. Ask Intel.
Alright it looks like you have a "Pin Grid Array" socket M. That would lead me to think you could upgrade with socket "M" CPU's unless BIOS issues. What CPU do you have now? -
Intel Pentium M735 (1.70 GHz Dothan).

I don't think you will be able to upgrade to a Core / Core 2 series CPU (these use socket 478) but you may be able to upgrade to a faster Pentium M provided the BIOS supports the CPU. Personally I wouldn't consider a CPU upgrade to be worth the investment. I would focus on the RAM and HDD.

^^ agreed, invest in a new notebook, you will get much more "bang" for your buck. You can get a dual core lappie for as low as $599.

Thanks, I already have 2 gigs of RAM and a 60 GB Hard Disk. I don't really want to upgrade to another machine, I bought the laptop fairly cheap as I will be working overseas and don't want to take something expensive. CD CPUs go for about £40 here and it would allow me to rip MP3/DVDs while not chewing up all the CPU...
