I have A 14.1" Thinkpad T61 that has a 60 GB hard disk drive, Fujitsu MHW2060BH @ 5400 RPM. I am thinking of getting more storage (not necessarily faster), but not sure of compatibility issues. What should I look for in the specs? Or are hard disk drives universal for all laptops? (really ignorant here :p)

What to do when I have bought a new HDD? How do I transfer everything from the old disk to the new one, including OS etc.? Seems very complicated task?

As long as it's 2.5" form and has the SATA interface, should be perfectly fine I suppose~

Your T61 can take any 2.5" 9.5mm sata harddrive you want.
The T61 has a bandwidth cap at 150mb/sec, so if you choose an SSD, your performance may be slightly lower.

If you are choosing a normal harddrive, I recommend the Hitachi 7K320, WD3200BEKT, Hitachi 5K500.B, WD5000BEVT

The first two are 320gb 7200rpm drives, and the last two are 500gb 5400rpm drives.

All of them will work in your system, and they all typically run from $60-90

All of these drives will be faster than your current drive, so your in a win-win. Faster and more space
