I ordered an u36sd and I would like to upgrade the slow 5400 hdd on it to a ssd. The trick is that I might be upgrading the notebook later this year and would like to transfer the ssd to the new one and would rather it be compatible.
Am I such a noob, worried over nothing? I've never upgraded anything on a notebook, I don't know of they are all universal. They all seen to be around .9-1 per GB so I figured might as well go with this one. Will I be able to use it with u36sd, and say x1? Is it a good choice? These things are still rather pricy!

It's fairly unlikely that a Windows laptop bought later this year will have switched to a completely new interface that's not compatible with SATA III drives - I haven't heard anything about SATA IV or an entirely new interface for 2.5" drives, though it is possible that ultraportable laptops will entirely switch to mSATA sometime in the new few years.
I would, however, be slightly concerned about the drive size. The Corsair drive that you're looking at right now is 9.5mm thick (which is fine for the U36SD), while the stock drive in the Lenovo X1 seems to be 7mm thick. You might be able to fit it in anyways, especially if the Crucial drive comes with a removable spacer (though removing it might void the warranty), or you might not.
Getting a 7mm thick SSD with a spacer could be a better choice, particularly for usage in ultraportable machines, and the price difference isn't huge (the 256GB Samsung 830 can be found for about $250 right now).
