I am buying my first non-multimedia laptop, and I just realized that i am biasing my processor options heavy due to past disappointment. Then I realized i have no idea what I need in terms of CPU.

I want a PC with Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I want to run Word 2003 with no lag at all. That's it, really. Tell me what i need. I realized I might be buying a T8100 and i'd never be using more than 20% of its load. I want this PC for 2 years, so before Windows 7 comes out, although a future-proof machine would be nice.

I know which models i'm down to, I just need the processor. Thanks!

If you want it to load quick, you dont need much cpu power, you need a fast harddrive. You should purchase a laptop with a really cheap harddrive and then replace it with a high speed 320gb 5400rpm drive, 200gb7200rpm drive or the fastest of them all, the new 320gb 7200rpm drive.
You should also look for 3-4gb of memory and a decent gpu if you plan on gaming.
If you dont game, a T8100 and a high end 320gb 7200rpm drive would be a great combination for fast operation.

Er...I don't understand why your current computer's processor/RAM combination would be inufficient to run Word...

The only thing that I could see is if you consider your current laptop a multimedia one.

A T8100 should be fine, with like 2 or 3 gigs of RAM to make sure there's no lag with Vista.

I agree with Meemat. I agree with K-T.

Meemat did a good job of explaining you won't be happy with anything new as what you listed is way beyond what is needed.

K-T called out what you need! I think you have Vista? Get more RAM. A 2GB stick for $35. Your HDD is really your problem.

With your complaints and current system replacing is the worst thing you could do.

What kinds of lags do you experience now?

It's not that my current lappy (Vista business BTW) is'nt up to it, it's the fact that it's not portable like I need it to be, and i figure all its extra unneeded power is eating its battery life, like the 8400 graphics, the T7300, etc.

I want a second computer, that is just powerful enough to run word, no lag. If that clarifies anything.

Do you have a certain screen size area (inches) in mind?

under 15.4 inches. Is the MSI Wind alright to run non-Aero Vista? (1.6GHz Atom, 80GB 5400RPM drive, 1GB RAM). I intend to install Vista on a 16GB SDHC card, and save all my docs to the hard drive, will that work?

The Wind is not made to run Vista. It will run but you will get lags. The Atom performs like a 1.2 GHz Dothan. In XP it will be better, but you may experience lags with bigger documents or images. I don't know how critical you are.

And by the way, the Wind is now shipped with 3 cell battery which means just 2,5 hours on energy saving settings.

I'm not sure if that is possible in the Wind but I doubt it. You'd get better results by installing a SSD. 64GB OCZs are now on offer for $259.

if all you want to do is run WORD... why stick w/ VISTA??

any LOW_END laptop when UPGRADED from VISTA to XP PRO should run WORD with a speed that can only be achieved in VISTA by spending twice as much cash.. IMO anyway...

I have my doubts. I would have to see these results repeated.

Especially the fact that they got better battery life in Vista than in XP could be a sign that something is off.

In Europe it comes with a recovery partition, without discs.

I'm assuming it will be the same in US.
