My ideal form of the Alienware 13 R3 is basically this....
Remove the 7700hq, replace with 7820hk.
Remove GTX 1060, replace with nothing. Likely lose some I/O on the laptop. Actually leave the 1060 but kill any power to it so the heatsink sits evenly.
This would actually make more sense to have a powerful 7820hk versus the 7700hq in a mobile platform. Call it for coders or something I dont care, However this would actually make the Alienware Graphics Amplifier make more sense as you can then buy it, and actually desire higher end GPU's (albeit at x4 you do see some bottlenecks even on external panels.
Is it possible to actually do this without killing the laptop? I understand its not an rPGA board, not much is anymore. I just like the idea of the 7820hk with 2 fans, 2 heatpipes. Probably run like 4.5 tops on AC.
I guess AMD is releasing laptops like this but sadly, no Thunderbolt because Intel IP yadayada
Anyways was just thinking and thought I would share.

I have a good friend with the R3 and he loves it, but he says he wishes to make it a bit more powerful so that it can be future-proof. If you manage to get this idea to work, I'd love to see it because its something my friend would also be interested in and generally seems pretty cool. -
This is the Alienware R3 motherboard, can you please explain how you are planning to remove and replace the CPU's and GPU's? or killing the GPU power.

I couldnt explain it, as I dont have an intimate knowledge base of the system layout or the knowledge of how to kill power to the GPU. These are just thoughts of what I wish I could have in the 13 R3.
Basically for the CPU, you would have to heat it up to remove the 7700hq, clean off the leftover traces of solder, reball the contact points on the motherboard, clean off traces off the 7820hk and heat it up to have the contacts solder together.
I am extremely ignorant of the details, this is much more of a @Khenglish domain of expertise.
Would there be any issue from a chipset or VRM point of view? The internal display is wired via integrated which is why this laptop has been a paperweight for the last year (since I bought it).
Maybe even an 8850hq would be a better middle ground since it can hold 4.0Ghz with 6c/12t and when ever GPU grunt is needed you then would just use the AGA

Is the GPU dead?
Not that easy to kill GPU power and not have the laptop misbehave, at least let it talk with the BIOS/EC. -
I have done something similar in Razer Blade 14 as far as the GTX 1060 disable. Changed some values in the bios to unlock, flashed, and disabled the PCIe port that was connected to the GTX 1060
your best bet would be to have somebody modify the BIOS then flash it back with a hardware flasherVasudev likes this. -

Its possible to upgrade the CPU, the ****-msi store on taobao even offered CPU upgrade service, so you are not the only one thinking about that..
