Hi
I got a Alienware M15x with 4gb Ram, bought Kingston DDR3 HyperX SO-DIMM 1600MHz 8GB (2x4GB) kit and computer starts up and recognizes 8gb in Bios.
But when OS boots it crashes and reboots in a loop.
Booted memtest86 from a stick but crashed after a few seconds and reboots.
I tried to use one at the time in different slots only to see the same as with both installed.
Then i tried different speeds without any luck, tried to change the voltage only to experience how to reset the bios by taking out the bios battery![]()
So i put back the old 2x2gb and it boots like nothing ever happened.
Then i ordered Corsair Value DDR3 SO-DIMM 1333MHz 8GB (2x4gGB) kit but all i got from that was the exact problem as with the Kingston memory.
so i put back the old ones and everything is works again.
What's going on here??
I did install them carefully but firmly into the slots so i'm certain that's not the problem here..![]()
Specs:
Bios A09
Core-i5 540M
4GB Ram (2x2gb)
Ati 7970m
240gb SSD
Does anyone have a clue or knows what i'm doing wrong here?![]()

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Have you tried slower memory? Perhaps the i5 you have (which only supports 1066 MHz RAM, 1st gen i7's support 1333 MHz max) is causing the faster memory not to boot properly.
-
I did try to force the kingston memory to run on 1066 and slower without any success.
I can try the same with the corsair. At this time i do not have any slower memory than 1333.
Interesting that you say that the I5 dosen't support 1333 because i was certain it did. If so the i5 would be replaced shortly. Im gonna double check later. -
OK, i tried to force the corsair memory (1333Mhz) to run at 1066 but the result was as before, reboot, looping etc.
BTW, in Bios it actually says that the old memory is 1333Mhz.
So i installed CPU-Z and it verifies that 1333Mhz is the running speed.
More info: the original memory modules are Kingston 2GB 2Rx8 PC3 - 10600S and as description says, there are 8 memory chips on each RAM module. Both new Kingston and Corsair RAM got 4 on each module.
Not sure if it's significant to my problem?
Anyways..CPU-Z Says that the old ones are PC3- 10700. a bit odd or just ignore it?
do we still blame the CPU? -
You need to use number of pin 204 and ddr3 -1066(1066MHz/1067MHz) to get 8gb I hope this helps

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
You might want to upgrade the cpu. 7970M and 540M are a little mismatched plus you will have better ram compatibility.
You ought to simply send back the sticks for a refund and purchases a pair of 4GB modules that simply run at 1333mhz CAS 9. The performance will be the same.
