Alienware M17x R2 GPU upgrade query

I am looking to upgrade the GPU in my Alienware M17x R2.

I'd rather avoid he 7970M because of its poor quality solder and consequent high failure rate (unless someone can prove otherwise). However if 7970M crossfire is the only viable option then I will take it.

I have the 1920x1200 CCFL display (non RGB). From what I have read on the forums the RGB display can cause some compatibility issues due to its colour requirements.

Single GPU is preferred, so I would like something as fast as possible. Either nVidia or AMD is fine.

 

I was able to find a AMD Radeon 8970m on eBay awhile back. Previously had dual 4870's which were stock when I got it. I removed both cards and installed the 8970m in to the left side of the laptop; the side with the hdmi connector. I have had no issues with it, added with the 16gb of ram I added I will get a few more years of use out of her.

 

Thanks for the info, i'll look into that card. Do you happen to know which manufacturer your card is from (Dell, Clevo etc)?
