    Hey,

Im contemplating buying a used ALIENWARE m9750 for my son, the owner says the original NVidia 9750 GTX 512MB is going out. i was wondering which Cards are going to fit in its place and if there are cards that will fit, that are a significant upgrade, thanks.

That'd be a 7950 GTX :) I think this is one of the "weird" MXM III's from AW.

From what I remember, you're rather limited with the MXM connection, and you can choose between these..

    8700m GT
    7950m GTX
    Quadro FX 1600M

I believe you've got two slots, so you can run the 7950 and 8700 in SLI.

My choice would be 7950 GTX SLI.

Also, be sure to ask this in the Alienware forum if you haven't already, you'll get more input that way.

Why don't you get him a newer laptop? The M9750 is old and has a Pentium M or low end Core 2 Duo system.. the graphics card might be good but getting even 1 or 2 of them would be expensive.. any new laptop would be faster.

somebody got the HD3850 from the m17 working in it over in the alienware section of the forum and with a core 2 duo T7600 which is what i believe is the best cpu it can take you could get decent performance but MXM graphics cards do cost a lot though

Don't bother. Mobile graphics cards get very expensive in the range you're talking about, and are extremely hard to find. (Not sold in normal retailers, like desktop graphics cards)

It has succeeded in saving numerous graphics cards time and time again if the issue is indeed a problem with the soldering. If the card is going out anyway, can it really hurt to try?

The m570ru is a good choice.

IIRC, you can BYO for ~$450-$500 depending on the specs. The iffy-ness of the 8700m is the only drawback.

After the oven bake fix, you should set the fan to a high speed or the GPU will go bad again.

Also undervolt the GPU to keep it cool.
