Hi, I just recently bought a external HD to to back up my DVDs, which seem to be around 5-10gigs, and HD video as well, usually ranging in multiple gigs.

I've been told that I should reformat it to NTFS and set the allocation to 64k, but when I right click on my HD in "my computer" the largest size it allows me to allocate the HD as is 4096.

Does anyone know how I can allocate my HD as 64k?

    Thank you.

Why would you want to allocate it at 64kb, the larger the allocation size the better.
Just format it as ntfs and then to what ever the largest allocation size is, and you will be fine.
The harddrive is going to be limited by the usb/firewire interface anyways. The drive will only run at its full potential, if the external harddrive runs through esata.

I was told 64k was the largest size and that I should set it to the largest allocation possible? 4096 is larger than 64k I would assume?

    He said that these were usually the options: 512, 1024, 2048,4096, 8192, 16K, 32K and 64K.

Thank you for your reply and I would appreciate further help, is possible.

P.S. The HD is 1(TB) in size, and I will be using ESATA once the new Clevo comes out.

sorry, I made a stupid mistake in my last post. I forgot that 4096 is 4kb, not 4mb.
If the system only supports a allocation size of 4kb (4096kb) than that is the most you can do.
The performance difference between the allocation size is very small, and I mean not noticeable.
You will only be able to set the allocation size larger, if your laptop has an interanl raid setup, where you set the allocation size all of the way up to 256kb.
