Anandtech has managed to get their hands on a couple of Nehalem samples and a couple of X58-based chipsets. Even though the platform is early, with memory controller issues and little optimization, the performance was impressive. It was faster than any x86 cpu available right now, AMD or intel
Here's Anands conclusion:

THANK YOU!!!
I've been thinking about waiting for Nehalem, now I'll read the article
-
so Q4 next year right?so i need my laptop to last just a year...
-
Q4 this year for Desktops, Q2 next year for laptops. If intel follows the roadplan.
-
I'm pretty sure they are talking about desktop chips. The mobile ones probably won't improve as much, as I'm guessing they'd rather have slightly better performance for much better battery life.
-
so when will it be released for notebooks?
-
CPU enthusiasts should have a kick at this
-
Looks good especially for someone who's into video editing!
-
20%-30% jump? Huh I was expecting more to be honest, unless we're going to be seeing 4GHz stock in mid year 09.
-
Exxxxcellent. AMD is now officially screwed out of any highend market share they could have dreamed of getting.
I want to know the pricing of Bloomfield though, I hope it really isn't too expensive. If I can build a good system at the end of this year for around $1800 or so, it'll be fine. -
AMD was KO with Conroe, they are KO with Nehalem.
-
AMD will continue to exist on the budget low cost market though, so I guess until Intel drops the Q6600 down to $110 per chip, AMD gets to live a little while longer.
-
Who knows maybe AMD will become the new VIA? lol
-
Q2, if Intel follows their roadplan.
This is what intel told us to expect. Official numbers. And Nehalem is already there on unfinished chipsets. -
Then what will VIA become, the next Cyrix?
Looks pretty good, the dilemma now is can I wait for the mobile chips to be released before I purchase another laptop. My Q6600 is doing everything I need now so I don't plan on getting rid of it by Q4. -
Did an AMD eat one of your children? Why the hate?
-
People seem to forget Intel uses AMDs architecture for 64bit support. If it weren't for AMD, I doubt we would really even see this technology out of Intel right now.
-
Cyrix was eaten by VIA by the way =))
And don't forget, Intel finally adopts AMD's idea about on-die memory controller.
I have to admit, I AM a fan of AMD. -
Intel said it themselves, you can only add a memory controller once (for the free performance jump). I'm curious, what will be their next major architectural addition/improvement? What do they have left to borrow or implement?
-
If AMD goes down, I bet you Intel will be stagnant with technological improvements... lol nothing else to steal.
-
Intel steals? ...and how will they be stagnant? Didn't they humiliate themselves?
-
Yes, they've "stolen" the concept of IMC.
-
...and AMD stole the concept of larger caches. Your point being? -
Exactly that. It's not stealing, it's "stealing".
-
If AMD goes down, Intel will have no major competition. Just like why does nVidia keep releasing new technologies? Because they have AMD (and Intel) pushing them. There is nothing wrong with using other people's ideas to improve your product. Just silly laws about intellectual property slow the uptake. The only time where competition fails is when it becomes more than rivalry and extends to stupid law suits and the like (ie. Gigabyte and Asus). If a company wants to prove that a competitor is in fact cheating consumers, an independent and objective company should be used to verify those claims.
edit: Actually Intel took AMD's cache plan too
AMD uses an integrated memory controlling giving the CPU direct control of the RAM and needs to use much less cache, while the Intel CPU's don't have direct control of the memory hence they need much more CPU cache. Intel's 45nm 'Nehalem' processor architecture will adopt AMD's approach to cache structure: small per-core Level 1 and Level 2 caches connected to a big, shared Level 3 cache since it now has the IMC.
-
HOLY SH** those things are fast! However, I have to cheer for AMD because I want competition and low prices. It is kinda funny though that Intel is using all of AMD's old tech in a new way (and killing them at it...).
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
It is official. Nehalem is awesome. But I still may get a cheap as can be Centrino 2 notebook because this Pentium 4 is killing me!
-
I don't hate it...but well, yea I do. I'm an Intel fanboy (did you notice, based on the sig/avatar?).
For perspective, think of how badly Intel has been slaughtering the AMD chips with Conroe/Penryn, which do not have the IMC. Does Intel really need to put an IMC in to stay ahead of AMD? No....but they will anyways, just to distance themselves that much farther from AMD in the performance race. -
So you hate them because Intel is better? So if AMD pulls ahead at some point (they will, no matter what these competitive CPU vendors change places eventually), you'll hate Intel, right?
Otherwise, I guess I don't get it. Is it like rooting for a sports team just because, no matter what? -
Wow, read what you just wrote.
I guess increasing clock speeds would be stealing also?
