When upgrading the graphic card in the e1705 from the nvidia geforce 7900gs to the 7900gtx or 7950gtx does the fan also needed to be upgraded, or is the the original fan sufficient to cool the upgraded card. Will the fan from the XPS m1710 fit the e1705?

You should check out this thread, it has everything you need to know about upgrading the E1705
http://eduncan911.com/archive/2007/12/11/why-the-inspiron-is-a-king.aspx
The 7900GS was offered in both single heat pipe, and double heat pipe models. the quadro fx2500m, 7900GTX, and 7950GTX all had double heatpipe cooling systems. If your laptop has only one fan in it now, you will need to buy a secondary fan to cool the graphics card if you get a double heat pipe graphics card.
Please note that the E1705 supports fan control, so you can download I8KFANGUI, and you can control the fans in their. I recommend running the fans at full speed when gaming in order to prevent overheating.

I'm very familiar with this article, yet it and others that I find does not address the issue of replacing the fan with one from the xps m1710/m90 or even if it is possible/beneficial. If the fan from the m1710 is a better more efficient fan would it not be wise to include that in the upgrade? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I know the secondary fan is definitely upgradeable. It only requires two screws to install. The secondary fan for the XPS1710 is going to be more expensive because it has lights built into it.
The numbers on the 7950GTX for this system are:
CN-0GU067-13740-778-0081
REV A00
The secondary fan model is:
MCF-J02AM05-2
It can be bought on ebay, just search the part number
