Hi, I know this has been posted a lot, but there's not quite one that fits my situation, so I thought I'd ask.

    I just ordered a Dell Inspiron E1705.
    It has the follow specs:

    T2300 Duo Processor
    60GB 7200 RPM HD
    1GB 533 RAM
    7900GS Nvidia
    2 Year At-home wrnty+accidental
    Windows XP Home + CD
    8X DVD-Writer
    17" WUXGA LCD
Total After 30% Off Coupon (it outweighed the 750 off) - an even 1,600.00 after shipping/tax/etc.

Okay, thats the important stuff. Now, for 200$ I can upgrade to the T2400. 280 for the T2500. Is that worth it?

I play a lot of games. HL2, BF2, WoW. etc. + plus I encode/decode movies, music, etc. this will be replacing my desktop for the most part. I have a relatively powerful desktop, so I could do th encoding/decoding on that if I had to.. the desktop specs are as follows:

    Athlon 64 3200
    Nvidia 7800GTX
    74GB Raptor HD
    Creative X-FI soundcard
    WD 8MB Cache 200GB HD
    21" Dell Monitor
    Klipsch Promedia 5.1

but I have a feeling that after I get this laptop, I will no longer use my desktop...lol...sad too, considering how much I put in to the desktop. So what do you guys think? Is going from 1.63 to 2.0Ghz worth 280$? There's no point in going from 1.63 to 1.8 since the increase is 200$ and for 80$ more I can get the 2Ghz, which is a 400Mhz increase over the 1.63.

This is my first laptop + its also my first dual core.

Sorry for asking a question that has been asked many times before...
    thanks for the responses.

    Doyle

    Another question I had... I see people getting the E1705 with a 100GB 7200 HD, a 7900GS, a 2.0Ghz Duo, 17" WUXGA, etc. and only paying 1.6k after 750 off?
How does that happen? I understand 2.4k-750=1.6k but when I configure a system it comes out to like 2.9k or 3k and it doesn't even have all of that stuff...now I know people stack coupons, but 35+750+3% doesn't bring a 3k laptop to 1600$....

    Just curious =P

    2000/1660 = 1.20
    1880/1600 = 1.175

20% more CPU speed against 17.5% more price - I wouldn't do that, but:
Most games today only use one core, so a higher frequency could decide if a game runs smoothely or not, especially with such a graphics card.

The T2300 will beat your Athlon 64 with no problem when using optimized applications (such as most video encoding apps).
