Maybe my original thought of how USB drives work is flawed, but I just want to make sure that everything on my laptop is working right after I updraded to Windows 7...
So, I always though that if "USB Port #1" had a drive path of "F:" that it would always have that drive path regardless of what flash drive or other device is put in it... Apparently this view was wrong though?
- For example, I put Flash Drive #1 into USB Port #1; the drivers for it download and it opens as drive letter "F:"...
- I eject that flash drive and instert Flash Drive #2 into USB Port #1; the drivers for it download and it opens as drive letter "G:"...
- Now when I instert either flash drive into any other USB port they will still open as "F:" and "G:" respectively...
Is there any way to see say drive path "F:" and "G:" without actually having the flash drives plugged in? I mean there must be, because obviously the computer knows that it has already assigned "F:" to something if when a new flash drive is insterted it is assigned "G:" even though the first flash drive is no longer connected... Disk Management only shows C: and E: when I do not have any flash drives attached...

the drive letter should not vary depending on usb port. it will vary depending on what other storage devices are plugged in as well.
say i plugged my usb drive in to USB#1 and it comes up as J as its drive letter
i can now remove this usb drive and put it in any usb port and it will still be J
if i was then to remove this usb drive and insert another one in to any usb port the other one will then come up as J and if i then insert the original usb drive in ot any port it will come up as K as there is alread a drive as J
in other words dont worry your windows 7 is working fine in this aspect -
^^^What he said. That's normal Windows behavior.
Another stupidly basic question about drive path letters...
