There are 2 laptops i'm interested in buying. Both have Nvidia 970m. But one has 4th generation i7 ($1100) and the other has 6th generation i7. Is there a big difference between the two in gaming performance?

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
@koolxxx no, but you may check both CPUs on notebookcheck.com just to be on the safe side.

Depends on the specific cpu models of those gen's...
Even if performance is similar, the 6th gen version should be more power efficient at light(er) loads which may give you longer run times if the battery capacity of both notebook models is similar.

What are the models? A 6700hq vs like a 4720hq the 6700hq wins, but not by a significant amount, I would save the money and go fourth gen if its a quad core as that is ample for gaming.

The Clevo P650RE with Nvidia 970m.

The notebook model doesn't help us. The processor models are what are important here to answer your question properly.
-
Intel Core i7 6th gen.

That is not a model. That is a series.
And we'd still need the model of the 4th gen series to compare it against.
-
Yeah for instance I'm almost positive the 6th gen i7 is an i7 6700hq. The 4th gen could be a lot of things though.

If you can afford the upgrade get the 6820HK... It will make the notebook more futureproof... And yes it is fine.. I wouldn't take a 6700HQ personally..
-
P650SE only came with i7-4710HQ. And no, I don't think there's a significant difference in performance between that and i7-6700HQ. Skylake CPU's do run a bit cooler and in general can undervolt quite a bit to keep things even cooler. Battery life difference won't be of much significant difference.

For gaming performance you're not going to notice a difference. If the laptop model with the Intel 4th-generation CPU is significantly cheaper, get that one.
Getting the laptop with an Intel 6th-generation CPU will give you slightly better battery life, and slightly lower CPU temperatures. Nothing you'd really notice, and nothing to write home about.
The other major difference is that the model with the Intel 6th-generation CPU will support M.2 NVMe, whereas the 4th-generation model will only support M.2 AHCI. Again, nothing you'd really notice, and nothing to write home about. So if the 4th-generation model is significantly cheaper, get that one.Starlight5 likes this. -
May I ask why you wouldn't take a 6700HQ? I'm assuming you mean at all, ever...
-
I meant the 6820HK is worth it over 6700HQ as it can clock much higher.. And a 6820HK+970M combo is good enough for a while...
-
You can't do anything with 6700Hq. Absolutely nothing... 4 cores at max 3.1GHz 24/7/365... Nice

If the 6700HQ lacks sufficient processing power to do something well, the 6820HK will hardly be better off.
That said, since the original question has been answered numerous times in this thread, it's now closed.
