Just curious what your temperatures are idle and after-gaming. I believe mines pretty hot and warranty is about to expire so if I need a replacement, nows the time.

Mines about 70C (With VMWare + Diablo II)
    55C Idle.

It's the hottest component in my Vostro 1500 =/

Idle is usually around 45c but since your max temps is only 70c, the vostros cooling design might explain the higher idle.

    I have Vostro 1400 with T5470.

    idle: 45C
    100% load: 65C

But, I undervolted mine to 0.9375V and the temps are:

idle: 32C (sometimes as low as 26C)
    100% load: 55C

Its been very stable so far, but I wonder if I can lower it even more. The absolutle lowest it'll go is 0.9000V, i think.

Still cooler than mine by 10C =/ You guys think I should get it replaced? It's a big hassle though.

Keep an eye on CPU usage, there could be a service that might be battering it....!! Run a diagnosis with orthos for a while....

Also boot with minimal services and programs, and let the notebook idle, then see the temps....

I have the vostro 1500 as well, and my idle temperature is between 36-45 C, and gaming temperature is between 48-54 C.
The reason why I am able to achieve such low temperature is that I have undervolted my CPU (at 8.0x Multiplier) to 0.900 volts. I tested the setting with orthos for roughly 2 hours and it was stable so I kept it like that, it has been 2 weeks and so far I have yet to experience BSOD or instability.

GPU heat could be adding to the ambient heat inside the laptop causing the CPU to run hotter... but 74 isn't too bad... you hit 90 and you need to start to worry

Definetely not the GPU adding heat as it's lower than the CPU's temperature (50C-56C). Going to try Orthos when I get back from work.

I just ran Orthos, it went up to 83C in a couple of minutes =/ 86C about 20minutes later which I stopped to prevent CPU damage.

Also, I ran windows with the basic services and startup programs, idle was still about 50C.

If it still has the warranty running, return it....Maybe Dell will clean it up a bit..!!

Already cleaned it myself with condensed air and sent it back TWICE to Dell. One time they changed the motherboard (Actually causing it to heat up more somehow), second time, they didn't do much. It was a big hassle and nothing has been fixed =/

Up to A05, have not upgraded to A06 since it causes PA problems and it doesn't have anything to do with thermal procedures.

The temps are fine, 50*C is not high....
you can try and undervolt properly, and CPUs have a max temp of just above 100*C and the BIOS normally shuts the PC down at about 95*C....!!
Your idle temps are fine if they are below 55-60*C....But it may hamper battery life....!!
So you can probably pester Dell for a replacement....
and have you tried a clean install..??

Definetely got not clean install, only reformatted couple months back. It jsut randomly became extremely hot. I've requested a CPU replacement but they are asking me to send it back to the depot for the THIRD time, I'm kind of reluctant.

Well, I don't think you have much of an option other than sending it back, if that temp is bothering you so much....!!

    Good Luck.. :)

I'm considering undervolting instead of sending back for warranty but warranty expires 8/10 (Because they said they'll check for defects = no guarantee of CPU replacement). What do you guys think?

Undervolt if for a few days and see if it makes a difference in temps....if not, send it back....!!
Even if they don't replace the CPU, you can trade off your CPU for a better one when the warranty expires and cleanup the heatsink and apply AS-5 to make it run a bit cooler..!!

=/ Still 48C~ idle but load with D2 on is only around 58C and with Orthos 63C

    Undervolted to 0.900V

Not sure why the idle temperature is stuck.

I would get it check out by Dell if possible, it could be a heat sink issue - not seated correctly. 63 C is the MAX temperature my CPU reached after play Mass Effect for 2 hours without undervolting. . Mass Effect is based on the UT3 engine which is well know for utilizing both cores. There's definitely something wrong with the laptop component.

Might try to reseat the heatsink myself, Dell's repair depot is more of a hassle than opening it ymself probably. Are you using a Vostro 1500 also?

Yes Sir, I am using Vostro 1500. Just for reference here are some specs for my Vostro.

    T5470 (1.6 Ghz & 0.900 [email protected] Multiplier) Max temperature: 54-55
    8600m GT (stock)
    2 GB ram
    160 HD

I am also using a cooler from CoolMAX, I am not sure if that attributes to the 8C difference between your t5470 and my. Before opening the laptop, you can try lifting the back of the laptop up with some solid object to generate a similar effect as a cooler Even though lifting the laptop may not work as well as a cooler. Work with it for couple hours, see if the temperature gets lower with the laptop lifted.

after all, let's try out all the non-risky ways of fixing the problem, I am not very comfortable with taking my laptop apart , I imagine others might feel the same. ;)

I can achieve 55C with 2 Virtual Machines /w 2 Diablos 2 with my Antec notebook cooler.
    45C idle with cooler

So its about the same. Just curious your max temperature is from doing what? Mines might run higher if I was running Orthos.

I would definitely undervolt for a couple days and see how it goes. Although 86C is incredibly hot......
