    Hi all,

I replaced my UL30VT with Seagate ST9500420ASG (with G-Force protection). Unfortunately, it's rather noisy with idle clicks. It's not an indication the drive is failing, but from what I read, it's the head parking itself during idle to prevent any accidental shock.

I have the two Seagate ST9500420AS on my HDX18T. They also clicks on idle, but it doesn't bother me because I can hardly hear it. Yep, even with TWO drives, it's barely audible. But with the UL30VT, it's a much smaller notebook and the clicks are rather loud. I am wondering whether the Hitachi 7K500 have this idle clicks as well? I'm considering replacing the Seagate with the Hitachi on my UL30VT even though it doesn't have any free fall sensor built in.

Why don't you try the free QuietHDD first?

    Good luck.

My 7k500 occasionally clicks, but I don't think I'm a typical example. My laptop just doesn't like hard drives.

Well, in that case, the 7K500 may be the way to go. ;)

I have one and hear no clicks 'constantly'.

    Cheers!

You might wanna try updating the firmware.
I think I've read it somewhere in this forum for Seagate drives updating firmware works like a charm

I've done that too. I used Dell's firmware and the clicks are still there. :(

Click Clack. BTW STX is junk you need to get rid of it. The company should be ashamed to ship out so many defective inll designed drives. The least the could do is improve their QC. BTW Hitachi is quiet. Can't hear it at all. Of course depends on your NB casing too. There is no click clack click. Try changing your power management settings to make sure its not the drive that is defective. I mean not another defective STX.

Well, I didn't say my Hitachi drive was clicking. I see in your signature that you have a Hitachi drive. I was referring to the Seagate.

    A few more suggestions:
    - try using NHC's built-in utility for managing HDD acoustics
    - try checking the BIOS for any options related to HDD acoustics
    - try lining the hard drive compartment with soft rubber, if possible. Any insulation will do, if there's room.

    - if all else fails, sell the drive and buy a Samsung or Western Digital drive. Seagates are garbage anyways.

All great suggestions! The first thing I thought was NHC. But it has not been developed for ages and won't install on Win7-64. UL30VT's bios has nothing on acoustics. I'm not sure about insulation. The chassis is so small and I doubt there are any room to line anything around the hdd.
