Hey,
just curious, any news or idea when notebook drives larger than 500GB will be available? Haven't heard much on that front. Thanks! Currently running a WD500GB drive in my tablet, but have suprisingly managed to fill it up.

Only drives I've heard of past 500GB are SSD's.

yes, ssd's went up to 512gb..nothing more. But i know desktops hard drives have reached up to 2gb

seeing how only seagate has reached the 500gb 7200rpm mark, it's hard to say when other hd manufacturers are following suit.
my guess is their focus is now on ssds and no longer on hd research -

Asus's new Lamborghini VX5 laptop has a 1TB SSD.

I suspect it is more a case of the manufacturers thinking that the market is not ready, so they don't want to spend money on a product which doesn't sell very well.
For me, the capacity jump from 320GB to 500GB means that I am not yet desperate for more space.

ok, didn't think there was anything out there yet... thanks for all the info!
Would also be curious what a 1TB SSD would cost, can only imagine my first three kids ha...
Guess it's time to start deleting some stuff... -
I'm getting a 500 GB hard drive to replace the 160 GB that I ordered my Vaio with. I would love more space for when I'm going mobile, but I don't think I'd any more than 320 GB anyway. I don't have a ton of information that I need to have with me at all times. I think I could get buy with a 500 GB WD Passport to keep movies and TV shows on for when I'm away from the house and want some entertainment. Perhaps that would be something you could do to alleviate your storage shortage. They are a great deal, in my opinion. They certainly come in handy. At least it'd be an alternative to hold you over until more high capacity drives come out.
But it is incredibly difficult to resist the large built in drives. Whether I need the space or not, I always seem to find a way to use it up. It's a nice luxury.
At this point, I plan on holding off on the drive upgrades until the solid state drives are more affordable. I'd probably be willing to abandon a 500GB spinning drive for a low cost 256 GB SSD. We'll just have to see how it all pans out. I'm not even up to speed on what improvements an SSD would offer; I am mostly attracted to how they are less prone to damage. -

Why don't those people who needs a large amount of storage and get a home server. That way, you can have 10TB of storage for everyone in your family and all of them can access the data anywhere at any time.

I only have 60GB left out of 492... Capacity is not growing fast enough...
Any news on larger than 500GB drives?
