Any reason not to get the 512GB MX100?

The hard drive of my laptop is dying: it has become very slow and neither chkdsk nor HD Tune can so much as complete a sector scan (chkdsk claims to have reclustered some files, but eventually ran into something so bad that even it broke). I would like to replace it with an SSD that costs around $200 or maybe $250 if this gets me something significantly better. As far as I can tell, the best product at this price is the 512GB MX100. Does anyone know of a better drive or a reason not to buy this one? I should clarify that "better" in this context means either cheaper or with more disk space -- I don't care if it's slightly slower or faster, though I do care about sudden controller failure and the like.

Also, are there any rumors of upcoming drives? I won't be able to buy this until the end of October in any case.

I had the 512GB Crucial MX100 for a week for testing before I sold it and made a small profit out of it. I say get it, it's a decent drive, slightly lower than the speed of the Samsung 850 PRO but definitely faster than the 840 EVO in *real world* not synthetic benchmarks. It's much much more reliable than the EVOs anyway since it has MLC NAND instead of the crappy TLC NAND and will give you the same consistent performance everytime you use it unlike the EVO which I would stay away from at any costs.

In fact, I just bought two 256GB Crucial MX100 for $100 USD each. It's a steal for the speed and reliability it gives you.

Most of the newer drives were released in the last couple months, so there shouldn't be anything major announced before January (CES) at the earliest. Crucial has historically had a pretty good reputation for reliable and cost-effective SSDs, and the MX100 is their current fastest drive.

Yep I picked up two 256GB for about $100 recently too. It's on my kids' laptops, but I even noticed a difference from the Samsung 840 120GB's that were in there that they replaced.

Thanks to all. MX100 it is, then. Now I just have to hope I can get my hands on one in a really short visit to the US.

How long were the 840's in use? Are these the original 840 TLC drives or are they EVO's? I think they may be suffering from the issue I point out in post #2, if they were in use for about 10 months or longer with the original 840 or anything over 1 to 2 months with the EVO models.

Original 840's. They're just full... to the brim, like less than 1GB free space left.

    1GB free space. Ouch!

Coupled with the old data bug, I can see why you find the MX100 faster. :)
