I was opening up the external western digital passport HDD:
    http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=199

It came in a pastic enclosure, like that for mp3s. I was tearing up the enclosure, when a plastic piece snapped and the rest slipped and slammed onto the hardwood floor (as if I had thrown the thing onto the floor). The HDD was still inside.

I am usually uncomfortable moving my laptop around while its running, so when the external HDD slammed into the floor, I nearly had a heart attack.

I plugged in the HDD, and it seems to run ok.
How bad do you guys think it is ? (In terms of shortened life expectancy).

The folks over at anandtech have recommended I check the SMART logs, any recommendations for a SMART monitoring tool ?

If it is a brand new unit I wouldn't worry about it. WD hard drives come with at least a 1 yr warranty, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 3 yr. warranty. Also, WD makes some really sturdy hard drives. If you're still concerned, try their Data Lifeguard hard drive diagnostic tools, someone on this forum suggested it and it look pretty good.

I would not worry. When switched off, new hard disk can withstand shock up to 250G and 20G when operating. I would run the diagnostic tool just to be on the safe side.
