I'm planning to replace HDD in my laptop from current 5400 RPM 160GB to newer faster hard drive. I found the SAMSUNG Spinpoint M7 500GB on Newegg.com. But there are not much information regarding this one. Does anybody know of any review.

My current drive is Toshiba 160GB OEM drive MK1652GSX.
Will putting 7200RPM drive give me better performance compared to 5400RPM drive ? Performance is more important to me compared to size so instead of going with 500GB if 320GB drive is giving me better performance that is fine with me.

The HM500JI should perform similarly to other 500gb 5400rpm drives based on the 250gb platters.
The Hitachi 5K500.B and the WD5000BEVT will offer similar performance
Honestly, I would spend a little more and get the 5K500.B as it is a very power efficient drive

All of the drives mentioned, Samsung HM500JI, 5K500.B, WD5000BEVT are all 500gb 5400rpm drives based on a 250gb platter
These drives will be similar in performance to 320gb 7200rpm drives because they are based on a higher data density.
They will not be faster, but they will seem as fast.
A 7200rpm drive will win in terms of raw speed as the faster spindle speed means shorter access/seek times, thus shorter loading times.
All of these drives are fast, so if you are trying to make a purchase between 500gb 5400rpm and 320gb 7200rpm, I would take the 500gb 5400rpm drive as it offers near the same speed, more capacity and higher power efficiency.
I think I saw a 500gb 5400rpm drive on Zipzoomfly for $80 or 90 today
Just one word of caution.
The Hitachi 5K500 is cheaper than the 5K500.B
The 5K500 is based on three 160gb platters, and it is 12.5mm thick. It is slower than the new 5K500.B and it probably will not fit in your laptop.
The 5K500.B is the one you want, not the 5K500
