I would like to upgrade my HDD from 120GB Hitachi 5400RPM to this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-MK2...cs&qid=1259873800&sr=1-4#moreAboutThisProduct
in my Acer Aspire 5610z, all advice and suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

That's the next model up (5400.6). -
For a few £ more, you can get a 7200RPM drive, which will offer a noticeable performance uptick. I like Seagate's too, not because they're faster, but because I like DiscWizard.

Hitachi makes a better drive. Do you drive Buick over Nissan?

See:

A bunch of us (on these forums) bought them at $80 - yes, half their MSRP of $160 USD.
Something tells me that they might be on sale again soon (for Christmas/Boxing Day).
Why this drive?
No benchmarks, but check this out:

That Scorpio Blue 500 GB drive that got spanked? That was the previous drive I was recommending - even over the Seagate 7200.4's (worst HD's I've ever used). -
There is no point linking him to Newegg, as he lives in the UK.
Best drive in terms of price to performance is the Hitachi 7K500 at the moment. -
Thanks guys/girls for the input, I'm a bit cocerened of the noise Hitachi 7K500 might make,as my stock HDD is of 5400 RPM I thought it's better to stick to the same speed. My needs are minimal, not a gamer, rarely download anything and I have used around 80GB out of 120GB. Yeh, Thanks for the reminder of New Year sale.

Then I would say you don't need a 7200RPM drive. It would give you a bit of a performance boost, like faster loading, boot up... But since you probably aren't a performance freak, like some of are, go for a 5400 drive. They are usually less noisy, cooler and cheaper, so you can go for more GB.
-
get a 5400rpm drive then but stay away from seagate ones... they seem to fail a lot.. western digital's all right but if you want best reliablility , Hitachi is your option...
-
Do you have any data to back up your assertions? I have to say my 7200.4 has been a solid performer.
-
if u look on the forum , there are more ppl saying that their seagate drivers are failing rather than working... is that good enough? Search on the net... seagate drivers fail more than any other brand...

Just as a counter point, even though I have had horrendous experience with the Seagate 500GB 7200.4's (I tried 4 of them - all very, bad) just keep in mind that people with no problems with them would not join a forum just to post - 'its working good/great'. Additionally, I personally know that same drive/model/firmware working without a problem in a MacBookPro too for almost 9 months now.
Also, when I tried all those Seagates, it was only with Vista - Windows 7 or even XP may prove to be a better match.
Just another data point for consideration.
Myself, if I had the time to test one again (under Win 7 x64), I would give it a chance, but I just received my Hitachi 7K500 and will be installing Win 7 to that over the next few days. -
i've had horrendous experience with the 250gb 7200rpm seagate. noisy as heck.
i had to swap to the samsung spinpoint. virtually the same performance, but silent. -

just one example... they're plenty more on the forum.... -
You said more people are posting that their drive isn't working than are posting it is. Linking one thread does not show me. You have no concrete evidence to back up your assertions, which means they are baseless.
-
i'm a busy person and don't have enough time to search through the forums.u can search urself.. every week i've seen someone complain about a seagate drive.... rarely seen complaints about other drivers.... Close thread..

Of course more people will post saying their drives are failing instead of working. How many people do you know will run to a message board to post that everything's okay and they don't need any help? People don't log onto websites that offer help if they don't need any. Saying that there are more threads about ____ not working over threads about the same thing working is a ridiculous claim. It will hold true for pretty much anything on these forums (more people will be saying that their Western Digital are failing vs. that they're working fine).
If you want to make a point, then you have to show that more people are complaining of their failing Seagate drives vs. other brand names (i.e. there are more topics of failing Seagates vs. Western Digital). But you also need to consider how many of each are sold (if Seagate sells twice as many hard drives as Western Digital, we can expect more topics of them failing).
So unless you've done some research and can legitimately back up what you're claiming then please don't make any false claims on these forums that will misguide users. Just because YOU'VE noticed more topics on something (and you may be noticing certain topics because you hate a certain brand name, which makes you bias) doesn't reflect anything unless you are willing to back it up.
