Anyone use HP pavilion type laptops with shiny surfaces in an office environment with overhead lights? I hate the light reflection.

I know what are you talking about and yes I hate it. Seriously keyboard designs on laptop these days are getting more and more backwards if you ask me. -
I dislike any shiny or glossy surface on a laptop.

There's nothing that gets on my nerves more than HP's mirrored glossy trackpads. I could live with the glossy casing if I had to, and I'm kinda partial to a glossy display, but the trackpad I want to literally rip it out of the laptop and hurl it out a 15th story window.

I sometimes end up buying trackpad "protectors" just to guarantee myself a textured trackpad. -
They make textured trackpad "protectors"? Where can I get those? -

I am in 100 percent agreement. Not one square millimeter of it on my EliteBook.
Glossy plastic exists to attract people's eyes in best buy. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I personally hated those HP with shiny palmrests and keyboards, terrible. My Alienware's screen is glossy, but it mostly stays indoors. Makes the RGBLED screen more vivid.

I have to agree with you, glossy is to suck in consumers, the same way they sell shiny cars.
-
I agree.
But weirdly, whenever I see shiny plastic, I automatically think "substandard junk". -

+1 here. The reason I hate glossy plastic is that it is dust, fingerprint and scratch magnet. It is hard to maintain and they are made of shoddy material. I honestly don't see any appeal to them and furthermore takes the laptops feel flimsy and cheap. I. Hate. Glossy. Acrylic. Period (or Fullstop). -
Have you ever seen a matte paint job on a car? Talk about dowdy.
Anyway, some things are meant to be shiny, some things are not. In the case of the aforementioned computers, I suggest you write HP (and any other manufacturers) and let them know how you feel.
I've written many companies from McDonalds to VW. Otherwise they know that "shiny" appeals to the eye and will keep building them to get your attention.Aren't the keyboard and palm rests matte though? -

I've actually only seen a matte paint job on a Lamborghini Gallardo, and IMO it's the best looking paint you could put on that car.
Now the cheap tuners that run around with half baked primer-jobs, no. Just, no. -
saw matte jobs on a few Ferrari's too, god were those cars beautiful. dont think ive seen a Gallardo though
-
Matte for the win. No reason for gloss on a work machine.
-
is this turning into the Elitebook users club in this thread?

Maybe because a lot of "substandard junk" uses glossy plastic. Substandard junk often means glossy plastic, but glossy plastic doesn't mean substandard junk automatically.

There in lies the connection to most consumer products: the need for sparkler, shinny, glitzy material to sell an otherwise mundane product.
The car market was a perfect example and becoming famous (or should I say infamous?) for doing this until reviewers and customer balked at those gaudy shinny dashboards that blinded you while driving. I especially hate the shiny metal that wore into plastic a few years down the road.
On the other hand, lots of you do demand an ever increasing lighter notebook. So you could be sending the manufactures a conflicting message when asking for a more subdued product? -

Plenty more "features" that we love to hate.
Anyone dislike shiny keyboard and palmrest surfaces in laptops (light reflection)?
