RAM prices suddenly jumped up in September. I've been waiting for it to fall since then to put into my laptop.
I'd like to get 2GB PC5300 (2 sodimms)for $130.

Well, I posted newegg specials that had the G.skill for like, $80 for 1 gig. Thats quite a drop from september when they were about $110.
-
Can you please post the link to the newegg special? I am looking at the G.Skill 1GB for notebook SODIMM and it's at 99.99.
-
I grabbed this kit from Fry's store, works great.

I believe it's only Cas Latency difference, that you woun't notice anyway unless you run benchmark apps, but you will NOT notice any difference between, 2X1GB DDR2 PC2-4300 or PC2-4200 when gamming for example.
I had 2X512MB ddr2 667 before that I sold and got this kit. Games run alot smoother now for example: Oblivion, Tom Clancys Rainbow Six Vegas. -
Thanks. Solid input.

don't hold your breath. When AMD switched to DDR2 last spring it almost completly drained the market of DDR2 by summer time. supply dried up and prices shot up. why would companies try to food the marked with more DDR2 now that they are making a killing on it?
-
Ram prices have been falling since they were invented. 10 years ago 64kb would have cost you $200
-
Newegg has 1Gb 667MHz:G.Skill=$72, Transend=$72, and Corsair=$78. I don't think you will see lower prices for many moons.
-
I think this's the on going prices for memory now.. Afte vista release and all, I see memory prices going down FAST, I don't think it's gonna go up now.
-
RAM prices have stayed the same more or less for the past decade. Occasionally they will drop for a short period of time, but them jump right back soon after. I am waiting for prices to drop, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

desktop memory prices have dropped a ton since the beginning of the year. I finally jumped with 2GB crucial XMS2 for $167 - was $100 more expensive a few months ago. But then again the prices are pretty much just back to where they were a year ago, 2GB for $130 might still be a ways off, if ever.

one reason desktop ram is decreasing is likely an over production in preparation for Q4 2006. I doubt they could have predicted the large increase in laptop sales during that same period. This could have cause a shortage (cough...BS...coughcough) in laptop memory modules and a suurplus of desktop modules.
As I recall RAM is traded now like other commodities. Which is the reason many of you who are in the system building business get daily price quotes for RAM.
Phillip:
I bet you are right in saying that RAM has been basically the same price for a decade. I cannot remember the last time I bought what was the defacto standard module at the time for under $80-$120... -
I've been tacking RAM prices for both Desktops and Laptops.
Both have had little fluxuation but Desktop RAM seems to be decreaseing a little but won't drop dramatically, where as the technology changes for laptop RAM but the prices more or less stay the same. The Only time I've seen laptop RAM drop is when there is a sale *cough "surplus" cough*. -
Too high?
I just ordered 2 1 Gig sticks for $160,- the pair.
I remember paying $100,- for 8 meg.
I would like to see the 2 Gig sticks drop.
They should stop making 256 and 512 meg chips alltogether. -

I dunno, maybe it is because DDR memory is no longer the standard and demand is up for it because of older system upgrades. The prices for PC100 were outrageous the last time I checked too. -
we also need to stop falling into the $/mb or $/gb because that is no longer, if ever, a valid indicator. Rather how much does it cost for a single mainstream max size module under that period's OS needs. Which is why RAM I feel has actually increased or at best stayed the same for as long as I can remember. I remember buying another 576K of RAM for about $200 and that was what it took to reach the MAX amount of RAM (640K) in the period under DOS. And these were single chips you had to insert into the sockets on your MB/Memory expansion board. So today a 2gb laptop stick goes for about what $200? Still the same price...
The more it changes the more it stays the same...we are all just donekys being lead around all day long by a carrot on a string... -
Right now is probably the best time to buy RAM. A 1GB DDR2 533Mhz Transcend stick cost $120 back in January and it's only $84 now. Still a bit off from the $73 I bought it for a year ago, so either there's some price gouging or RAM prices are just roller coaster rides.
Anyone else here waiting patiently for RAM prices to fall ?
