Well I am considering to buy a Inspiron 15R/ M5010R notebook. I found a killer deal on Dell Outlet for one.

What do you all think about the AMD processor?
The Dell people said its almost identical to the i3.
They said its kinda like Pepsi vs. Coke when comparing them.

    Notebook specs:
    Dell Inspiron M5010R
    Processor- AMD Athlon™ dual-core processor P320 II 2.1GHz
    15.6" LED screen
    3GB- 1333 DDR3 RAM
    320GB HDD (5400rpm)
    6cell battery
    OS-Windows 7 Home Premium(64-bit)

    Is this a decent notebook?

The 'Dell' people are on drugs.

That AMD processor is no match for an i3 when all factors are considered (like performance and battery life).

Besides, it is well known that Coke is it! And Pepsi is a poor substitute. ;)

    Oh is that so?
Will this notebook be fine for just regular school work?

It scores about 1292 passmark points. About the same performance as a Dual Core Celeron T3100.

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

It's enough for regular school work, watching movies, surfing the web etc.

Maybe the Dell rep was referring to the i3 330um ;)

In that case he had a point, performance wise.

no this will not be as good as a core i3... its more like an older Intel Core 2 Duo T6600... it will be just good enough for schoolwork , some movies at most..

Depends what 'regular school work' is.

There is school and then there is school...

Some people go to school to be writers, some go to be architects - vastly difference performance requirements for both.

So, are you in High School, College, University or (maybe?) still in elementry school?

    Elementary school...Lol.

Why Dell? And why Dell's outlet? Look elsewhere for a non-dell computer like a Toshiba, HP, Asus, Lenovo or Apple. You'll actually have a shot at getting a well built computer with decent customer support that way. Dell can't offer that anymore. It's been years since they offered a good product backed with support to match.

Try this if you're in the $500 buying-for-school-purposes range : Lenovo 14", or maybe this: Asus 15.6"

But if you're set on Dell, you can do better. Dell 16"

Keep looking for good deals, don't just snatch the first one you see. You'll get ripped off that way. It matters 6 months down the road when you start having computer problems and Dell won't help you...
